I'm surprised there isn't a thread on here regarding it....
Another rise on fuel after the sneaky one recently. There was previously a rise of 2p to 'offset' the reduction in VAT to 15%, guess what, the VAT went back up and that 2p stayed on! Now another 3p.
I've never worked under a Tory government but I'd like to see the results. Can't be any worse than this shower of *****.
Before some of you jump on me, I won't be voting for any of the cretins (from any party).

Petrol stations really bug me, how can one garage have a price of say 114.9 but you go a mile down the road and its 118.9 there should be a set price and each station has to stick to this. If we had a decent government at all who actually gave a toss about the people in the country they would have either froze fuel prices or put the price down for at least a year

How would that work? Government takes a fraction of each litre in tax. Petrol stations are free to sell at whatever price they choose after that.
Small local garages will always sell at higher prices than the big firms to make a profit.

How would it not work, surely if there was a set price then the government would make more money, this way they wouldnt have garages selling fuel cheaper hence not making as much money as i use the word cheap very lightly as the cheapest ive come across lately had been 114.9 and that was by one of the bigger companies and not my local garage

Yeah, a very bit fraction, around 7/10 as a fraction. One of the highest fractions anywhere in the world for fuel duty.
Whilst I would agree that everyone selling at the same price wouldn't work, the prices need to come down quicker to represent fluctuations in oil prices as the happen, not 3 months after they went down as they go up immediately when oil goes up.

What about the crisps and sweets they sell? Should they all be the same price?

It's infuriating how much those b******s claim in fuel duty. I'm well aware of their environmental targets and willingness to try and reduce the UK's carbon consumption, but what's the alternative?!
Our public transport is an abhorent mess, and the prices for using it continues to rise as fuel duty continues to rise, as the companies operating the transport need to cover these costs.
What's the Fawkes bloodline doing with itself these days...

It wouldn't work as petrol stations aren't nationalised. I totally agree that the current price is crazy.
I'll also add that by saying the government take a fraction, I am aware and angry that they take such a large fraction.
I'm angry that they raised duty to compensate for the lowering of VAT but kept the duty on when VAT rose again. Shower of sneaky chancers.
A rise in fuel duty will of course have a knock on effect on food prices etc as it will cost more to get the goods from A to B.

Waste of time yesterday's budget.
Political posturing by Brown & Darling with **** all substance.
It had 'zero' effect on stock market, which tells you all you need to know.

Different shops have different costs though so they therefore have to price their products accordingly.

Shops should be able to charge what they like - it's part of business. If one shop is too expensive, or overprices for the quality it gives, the folk will go elsewhere.
People are entitled to make a living and part of that endeavour is being able to set a price on your own labour.

the price of petrol is shocking.

Supermarkets make no money on petrol most of the time-they sell it as a loss leader to entice you into the supermarket or ministore where they make their real money. Independents, who generally pay more for their petrol as they do not buy in such bulk as the chains/supermarkets make very little money, maybe 1p per litre

This might have once been the case, but Tesco out at Corstorphine charge on average 3 pence a litre more for unleaded than Shell Bowac just around the corner. I reckon they're taking advantage of the customers laziness to drive the extra 500 yards to fill up their car after filling their cupboards!

Tesco aren't daft either. They had a 5p off per litre recently which they introduced the same day they raised prices by 3p per litre.

Is the duty on cider not really low though? So the actual increase in retail price won't be that much? I may be wrong, I don't drink cider :greengrin

Most of these filling stations are franchises. You might find that they are owned by different franchisees.

It did't seem very consistent with the percentage rises on other types of bevy - then again, I may have misconstrued it.
I don't really like Cider anyway unless it's that Bulmers pear stuff :agree:
