One interesting item unearthed as the concrete was ripped back from the old terrace was a bottle of Sanderson's Brewed Ginger Beer from the Criterion Works, Edinburgh. It's amazing that the bottle was still intact having been buried deep down under the feet of thousands of supporters for years. We'd love to hear from any supporter who knows any history of Sanderson's? What era this bottle will have been from? Or even where the brewery was located? If you can add any background
do you think this could be from the people who built the original stand?

It's an omen I tell ye. This bottle was meant to be dug up as it has been lying there since 1902. Maybe now, the spirits will rest.
It tastes horrible. You'd better just give it to me ;-)

In view of this recent find I propose that Hibs call the new stand The Sanderson's Stand.
Failing that The Ginger Beers Stand. :greengrin

It'll be long gone. If you look on the .net time lapse movie, I'm sure you can see Rod with his metal detector right at the start.

I take it there was space under the East then? I always assumed it was a mound of concrete...

Dead right. That was to be my half-time bevvy at an East of Scotland Shield game in 1955. It was a present from my grandad, and I want it back. Plus the twopence I'd have got back on the bottle. Plus the interest at 5% per annum compound on that twopence WHICH I was intending to put in my National Savings account for my old age which has now arrived.
GET IT SORTED, MR PETRIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :grr:

found a site about bottle collecting
"One of the beers was an extremely rare acid etched green glass bottle from James Sanderson of Gainsborough. There was still no sign of ginger beer bottles in the seam, but it was still early days"
Are you sure Doddie? Sounds very like the one I lost at a game in 1898 :greengrin
Was that the year you became very 'Grumpy' when you were killed fighting the Boers. Or is that just a Loadypish? :greengrin

No wonder there were bigger crowds in those days if fans were getting their threepenny bits out during a game! :greengrin

Yup,
I've actually contacted Jerry Kemp from that site and asked him if he can dig up more information on the company and the likely date of the bottle.
He has replied that he is actually in Edinburgh a couple of days a week, so I have put him in touch with Elaine Morrison for a viewing of the bottle - he will be able to date it and is prepared to do some research on the company.

Was that the one you told me about - you and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle got arrested for singing "We've got a lovely bunch of coconuts" in the Boundary Bar after the game? :cool2:

The very same Doddie :agree:
The singing was brilliant that night but the manager took exception when we started to rattle out the earliest version of 'If you hate the ...... etc" In those days it was a bit less easy on the tongue as the words were "If you hate that little football team that plays in the dismal depths of Gorgie, clap your hands"

Is that no rhyming slang? To be properly PC, we would need to call it the Paul Hartley stand.
