View Full Version : Friendliest player you've met who's played for Hibs

A bit similar to the other threads going around at the moment with regards to loving or hating the players.

If you've met any of the players, which do you think has been the friendliest to either you or other fans or anything like that?

For me personally, Every player I've met has been friendly, but the friendliest I think was Martin Canning, we had just finished playing Celtic, and we'd lost 2-0, and I was waiting for my mate outside the main reception, Martin was one of the first people to leave the stadium, so to give me something to do I asked if he would sign my programme. I went over to ask him as he made his way to his car, I said hello and asked him if he would sign it. He greeted me with a hello and asked me how I was, I responded and asked the same question, of course his response was not all that positive given that we lost the game but it was good to actually have a chat with him as normally when you see people asking for signatures or anything like that, the players sign whatever it is they are handed and then they just go. So it was a nice touch I thought. :agree:

Over the years I've met and chatted with many Hibs players but the one who fits your question most is Arthur Duncan. A gem of a man, no airs and graces and a genuinely nice man.

Others include Pat Stanton, the late Erich Schaedler and Lawrie Reilly.

The great man himself, Eddie Turnbull was phenomenal and chatted away to me like old buddies as he signed his book in Waterstones. I had a great chat with Stuart lovell on a 16 bus last year as he made his way down to Leith to see another Hibby. He was super friendly and gave me an insight into Mixu and other behind-the-scenes stuff at ER.

An absolute gentleman, with no airs and graces whatsoever.

Murdo MacLeod, strangely enough when he was with Celtic and injured, before a Hibs v Celtic game. Was taking penalties in a competition at the time and waiting in the tunnel to run out. He came up and for no particular reason started chatting away, asking who I supported and took a real interest. I think I said words to the effect that I hoped Charlie Nicholas didn't score, as he was in line to get the Golden Boot at the time..............Murdo without flinching said "don't worry son, I'll nip into the changing rooms and tell him to wait until next week to score", then waited until I ran back in afterwards and said well done. Great day that as well. Scored both my pens right in front of the Dunbar end. Shame it was full of Celtic fans :boo hoo:In more adult life, Eddie Turnbull, who I still see and blether with now and again. A true football legend.

Met Grant Brebner on George Street about 3 years ago, both having had a few and when I told him I was a Hibby he gave me a hug and talked about his wish to play for us a again.

Also met Kevin McCann in Malia in June 2007 and he was a top bloke. We were the first (and only I think) people to recognise him and chatted away for hours. Bought us all a drink even though he wasn't drinking and talked about how he felt he hadn't quite made it as a footballer yet. Everytime we saw him from then on, he stopped to have a chat. Good guy :agree:

I was standing outside Easter Road a few hours before a game with my kids when Andy Walker came up the road and he did a huge body swerve and went in the gates. I wasn't impressed then Chic Charnley sauntered up the road looking dapper and came straight up to the kids and chatted away to them and asked them if they were looking forward to the game. Off he went smiling and my kids were delighted.

Matty Jack was the other. Met him at a soul night and reminded him of the game against Dundee United where DU were time wasting time right up to the last minute. Matty should have really kicked the ball out but went for it and we scored a goal in the last minute. We both had a good laugh about that one.

Meeting Gary O'Connor at the Cube back then wasn't great either. There were rumours he might sign for the Old Firm so I said I hope you're still with us in the summer to which he replied "**** Off". He was a charming laddy.

Met Joe Tortelano at a mates wedding and he was a great guy. There was this bloke from the wedding band that was doing my nut in at the bar boasting about playing in front of 2000 people at The Usher Hall. I turned to Joe and asked him what the biggest crowd was he'd played in front of...
"62,000, Scottish Cup against Celtic at Hampden" says Joe.
Let's just say the guys gas was at a peep!

Met Shades when I was a lad and he was cool. Also lived next door to Jimmy O'rourke when he owned The Corstorphine Inn. Gem of a man.

Russell Latapy by far, what a great guy he was. Seen him outside Bamboo nightclub in Glasgow a couple of years back and joined him for a smoke. He chatted away and was unbelieveably down to earth.

Eddie Turnbull can tell a story or two, and Ian Murray seemed like a decent lad as well.

My mums cousin, who used to take me to my first games, got on really well with Arthur and he gave her his old purple bukta tracksuit top, which she then passed on to me. Still got it but no idea where. I met him a few times and he was always a top bloke.

Lewis Stevenson

I used to run a nightclub that was popular with the Hibs squad and whilst some where a total embarassment to our club, Lewis Stevenson was always a total gent. He was rediculously polite and was always embarassed to to come to the front of the queue to get the VIP treatment. Quite often I'd have to go and get him from the back of the queue and take him straight in. Always acknowledged the staff and made a point of thanking everyone on the way in and out. A really nice guy.

For me met Fenwick who was a nice guy and was with McManus. When I asked him why he was not getting a game Tam just went because he s***e made me laugh as about a 15 year old I was at the time. Met JJ in Ireland he was a top bloke he was speaking to some people in the hotel saying how he use to play for Rangers, I just went 'that something you should not be proud of' and he laughed then had a bit of chat. Also met Bamba also in Ireland when a bit drunk and had a great laugh and got a photo with unfortunately only had phone on me so bad quality :grr:

Nick Colgan as well, I remember meeting him when I was a kid there were a group of other kids, more than Happy to chat with the kids. Met ivan sproule on a bus with his dad and brother the day after the 1-0 reserves win at tynie last year. Very bubbly character who came accross as a genuine supporter

As a hibs kid I went to the Christmas party and the 2 players turning up for call of duty was stephen tweed and chris jackson. tweedy was a gentle giant and happy to speak to all the bairns and sign their calendars. he had been sent off the week before for fouling Wayne foster. I asked "what did you get sent off for stephen?" to which he responded "I rugby tackled a jambo!"

well done tweedy.

Known Pat Stanton since I was a 5 year old kid as his son Kenny was at school with me - one of the nicest, most modest and loveliest people you could meet. Once gave me his 1972 League Cup winners tie when I stayed at the house which I still have.

Without knowing, it was Franck Sauzee who I bumped into one night on Princes St. Was a student at the time so happened to have a pen and paper in my bag. Normally would never bother accosting anyone for an autograph but I did Franck. He was with his wife and another friend but stopped to sign for me and chatted for about five minutes about Hibs before shaking my hand and running along a quiet Princes St to catch up with his wife! I was on cloud nine all the way home. A true gentleman!

Must also mention that although I had no time for him at Celtic I met Strachan in a nightclub when he was Coventry manager up for Gordon Hunter's testimonial. When told him I was a Hibby, he was great. Really nice bloke. Take as you find I suppose...

Derick Townsley - I met him in a club one night and went up to him to offer to buy him a drink and say that I always felt he got unfairly treated by the fans, as I thought he was a decent player, especially coming off the bench. Lewis Stevenson's a really nice guy, met him whilst on a tour of the stadium last January.
Ivan was a great guy, really friendly.
Same with Boozy and Jones.
Met Pinau and Bamba once, and that was an utter hoot - Pinau, despite not getting many chances said he loved it at Hibs (and that was under Mixu! :greengrin)
Also met Mixu, KeithKeithKeith, Grant Brebner, Maka, and Oli Gottskalksson. I haven't really met any player who's been a prick, which is quite nice although I'm sure they're out there!

Met and had my photo taken with Ned, Lawrie and Pat last year which has to be one of the greatest moments of my life, to be chatting with three legends who were so unassuming and down to earth was just fantastic.

I feel like a bit of a stalker now! :greengrin

It's funny when people meet players and the opinions are totally different - perhaps there are players who are generally decent but are caught on an off day or whatever and come across badly, I don't know.

Maka seems like a sound bloke. Would always stop for a chat on Dundas Street on his way back from training. Happy to chat about the game and stuff.

There's been a few, however Murdo McLeod stands out for me.

I was with Hibs for a few weeks before ankle injuries forced me to quit the game at 17-18. I haven't kicked a ball (in disgust) since then.

The following season, my friends and I travelled through to Firhill. We parked the car up and were heading down to the ground. Murdo was getting off the team bus and made a be-line to my (shocked) mates and I. He asked me how I had been and then went onto share some banter.

He is an absolute gent, am so glad he is on the mend following his op.

But to be fair, there are plenty of good Hibs men I've encountered, M O'Neill, big Franck amongst others.

Me and a mate gatecrashed Dave McPherson's birthday party at Cavios on the Shore when I was a student. He was alright. We were dressed up as a sailors and were winding our way home from a previous party.

He asked who my team was, but because of a misunderstanding that we were Greek sailors, the Restaurant manager was plying us with free drink. I had to pretend I didn't understand English.

It was an awkward situation.

Had the pleasure & the honour of working alongside Pat Stanton & Lawrie Reilly when I was involved with the Hibs Historical Trust - can only back up earlier posters & say both are gentlemen & I could listen to their tales of Hibs all day & all night.

Surprised Jackie McNamara not been mentioned yet - another gentlemen and a great Hibee whose always got time for folk. First met Jackie many years ago in the Brunton Hall when I was on the committee of Musselburgh Hibs & I think I'm right in saying we were the first supporters club to make him player of the year once he settled into the Hibs side after the controversy of coming the other way when Pat went to Celtic. Met him many times since on Scotland trips & at Hibs games & there's always a hello or a wee chat.

Another of life's gentlemen - sadly no longer with us - was Wullie Ormond. Totally unassuming despite all his achievements - still Scotland's best ever international manager by the way. We ran a fitba team out of his pub in Musselburgh & while he was manager or coach at Easter Road he gave us a set of strips that Hibs no longer needed (in the days before Rod obviously!) - can still remember them, they were horrible! Purple with white sleeves & green & yellow sort of piping - bukta they were. Think Hibs only wore them a couple of times & I have a very vague recollction of one of the games being at Parkhead. Bet they'd go for a fortune on ebay now!

Eddie Turnbull - We were playing Dundee United about 7 or 8 years ago up at Tannadice, think it was the last game of the season and we were waiting for players autographs after the game. He came out of the ground with his friend and asked how we were still standing about and asked if we were ok as we were the only ones with Hibs colours on. He asked how we were getting home and offered us a lift back to my friend's house in Perth where we were staying! So we jumped in the car with him and he chatted away and gave us some stories and made sure we got home ok! Will never forget that!

Also i know he's not a player but Tam McCourt - we were playing Gala Fairydean in a pre season friendly and me and the same mate were waiting to get the bus down to Gala when a mini bus stopped and asked us if we wanted a lift down, Tam and another guy, can't remember his name, picked us up and took us to the ground and got us in for nothing! We had to put the teams kit out for them in the changing room and just as we were finishing putting the strips and that out in came the players!! was Brilliant! Even took us back home again and bought us a McDonalds on the way home in Gala!!

I used to have the landscape maintenance contract at the block of flats where he lived. As soon as I set foot inside the ground's he was out and on my case about ridiculous stuff such as members off the public dropping litter and cracked mono-blocks, both not in my specification! I did pick the litter up on each occasion but he would still moan. I never spoke to him about football. Having dealt with him, I lost what respect I had for him. It got to the point I dreaded each visit. Thankfully I had enough contracts to be able to drop that one and I would be quite glad if I never saw the man again!.....

I can remember meeting Tony Mowbray when he was at Hibs, very nice guy, also Tam McManus sticks in my mind as being a really nice bloke, I've met Tam McCourt, he's a laugh, and also met Gareth Evans when I was at the training centre with a mate, Gareth was there and we talked with him, totally top bloke. Nick Colgan as well, I remember meeting him when I was a kid there were a group of other kids, more than Happy to chat with the kids. Thinking back all members of the Hibs staff and team I've met have all been really nice.

He is a laugh, a right joke to be precise and he is a member off the groundstaff or whatever and is NOT a player, even though he thinks he is ! The league cup final photo's still annoy me.

I have to agree, I met Eddie Turnbull once when me and my dad were in Tam's picture shop along leith about 14yrs ago, he was lovely and very chatty, although I dont think he enjoyed me showing him my bellybutton piercing that I just had done 1hr before, he looked a bit white lol!

Frank Sauzee, Derek Townsley, Kev McCann, Mixu, Dirk Lehmann, Dean Shiels, Boozy, Benji, Johnny Collins, Chris Hogg and Andy McNeill were all sound as.

I actually found Rob Jones to be a bit of a tosser and Zemmama basically blanked me.

I used to speak to Garry O'Connor when he stayed in Haddy as i'd see him at the shops etc and his house was near my Grans. Top, top guy.

Suppose i better add my Hibs/Arbroath playing mate is a pretty sound lad aswell :greengrin

I remember a few years ago when I was still at school we were all having a game of football in the park and we noticed an old man watching us play. I realised it was Eddie Turnbull so after a while we went over to talk to him, he was brilliant and even though there was only 3 or 4 hibby's there, everyone else also wanted to hear what he had to say.

He talked about the Hibs team at the time and he said he thought of all the players we had Steven Fletcher and Steven Whittaker would become the best players, which isn't the worst prediction ever. He talked about what he felt was wrong with the way youngsters are trained these days and when I said that he can't be too impressed with our game he didn't hold back out of politeness :greengrin. I said well done to him for rejecting Man United to stay at Hibs and he informed me that if the money was right he would've been away in a shot. :tee hee:

All in a great guy and I later bought his book which I enjoyed. He even didn't mind when I asked him how come the famous five were so good but they couldn't win the bloody Scottish Cup.

Matt Doumbe came into my school and spoke to the kids, was a very down to earth guy. Alex McLeish gave my wife a lift in his taxi once and was very nice. I knew his missus too and she was a really nice person.

Going off the subject here (and awaiting abuse for it but its kinda relevant) - Steve Fulton was an absolute diamond when I took my class of kids down to Tynecastle for something. I've mentioned this one before but he really did make their day. Lots of the other pros didn't give them the time of day (not mentioning on ex-yam now senile old Rangers player) who was cocky as hell. Fulton, who didn't need to do anything for my class, came over, signed all their worksheets and was as far away from 'up his own erkie' than you could possibly get.

Well done Baggio!

Shelton Martis.

I was getting a tour around Easter Road that had been organised by someone over on the bounce. Anyway, after being shown around the upstairs of the West Stand I was taken downstairs into the changing rooms. I had a small chat with Zemmama but his English wasn't very good at the time.
Only moments after finishing my chat with Merouane, Shelton Martis appeared from the showers around the corner and waltzed right into the changing room completely and utterly bollock naked with his walloper just hanging there situated no more than three feet away from me. I was stunned. There I was, one minute on an innocent tour of the ground and the next minute I was standing there speechless as I was being confronted by Shelton Martis' oversized meat sword.

Top marks to the big guy though, he wasn't fazed at all. It's not every day you find yourself meeting a 17 year old boy for the first time with your ankle spanker on show but he dealt with it perfectly. After the initial few akward seconds had passed, Shelton nodded and smiled and said "alright mate, how's it going?"
"fine", I said
He then shook my hand and asked me if I was going to the Celtic game the next day and spoke about how much he was enjoying himself at Hibs and then also signed my Hibs top.

One of the most bizarre experiences of my life.

Also met Alan O'Brien who was cracking banter

:agree:

Ivan Sproule - met him at the airport after the 2007 league cup final. True gentleman and complete legend in my book.

met quite a few by chance, early in his Hibs career Alex Cropley used to be around our estate and he was a genuinely friendly guy, Shades was absolutely tops, met Roughie in Jocks Lodge one Saturday night, my missus liked him and he was delighted to talk away to us and he autographed my arm. Best for me was Jimmy O'rourke though, seen him occasionally around Jocks Lodge but years later when in Glasgow for the Livingstone cup final he spent a good bit of time talking to a group of us and posed for quite a few photos - made a great impression on my son who had only heard about the famous player from me - he actually apologised for having to go! Pat Stanton, Keith Wright, Steven Whittaker and Benji. Keith in particular is a really lovely, unassuming guy and did a lot of great work with kids from Craigmillar in a project we were supporting. Benji was great to my kids after the Killie league cup final. Stopped to sign programmes and chatted for so long he had to be pulled back onto the open top bus before it left City Chambers.

For non Hibs I found Ian McCall surprisingly entertaining company. Kenny Dalglish refused me (a wee Scots boy) an autograph at the Liverpool team hotel in the late 1970's. He was very rude and unpleasnt and this contrasted with all the other players who were really friendly.

Theres quite afew that i could mention to be fair. Having worked in retail for many years before getting a "real" job, I've had the pleasure of chatting to and serving many Hibs players down the years.

Can always remember being 16 and working at the Tesco on Broughton road. It was a week before we played AEk in Greece and Craig Brewster was in for his weekly shop. I kind of shreeked at him nervously.."you alright Craig?" in a prepubesant tone, half expecting him to say "aye" and bugger off down aisle 4, but he stopped and chatted away to me for about half an hour telling me how excited he was to be going back to Greece in a Hibs jersey and how much confidence he had in the squad. Top bloke.

I occasionally chat to Eddie Turnbull in the street in Stockaree and it's always a pleasure to listen to his views on the current situation. Perhaps age has mellowed him, but you could not meet a friendlier individual who will spend as long as you like talking about the game.

From a terracing point of view, I also remember Arthur Duncan used come out early for the second half to have a chinwag with the worthies down the front of the Cowshed.

The friendliest visitor I recall was Ally McCoist (despite sneakily lamping Mark Fulton) who always entered into the banter about his poundage in the right spirit.

Have met many and have to say up front, I can't actually think of any who've been rude/unpleasant/dismissive at all - which says a lot!

Top picks:

Ian Murray - always approachable and friendly
Tommy Preston & Willie McFarlane (RIP) - had a great night out listening to their stories after some game in the Blobby era
Paul Kane - legend and one of the biggest hibbies ever, always says 'alright pal'
Neil Martin - such a nice guy, always there for a chat and so unassuming
Garry O'Connor - always seems to have time for Hibs fans
Deano & Ivan - legendary Bounce do ... nuff said... they love the Hibs!
Yogi - sat next to him at the raffle at Franck Sauzee Appreciation do ... he was as excited as the next Hibby. Legend.
Lewis Stephenson lived in the flat below me for a while and seemed a lovely laddie.... can say the same for Paul Hanlon, Darren McCormack, Scott Brown and John Rankin having met them a few times at various dos.

But the best story involves Franck Sauzee himself.

I was travelling to see Scotland v France in Paris (Bertie Vogts humiliation, but we weren't to know ...)
In the lounge at Edin Airport sat Barry Ferguson. Thought it might be nice if he signed my ticket for the game (even tho he was injured) and he was unbelievably ungracious. You'd have thought I'd asked him to exhume my grandmother by the expression on his face...

5 mins later -in walks Le God. I amble up luckily holding my 6-2 ticket (which I sadly carried around with me at that time) and asked him if he could sign it.

He couldn't have had enough time for me, or been more polite.

The contrast was unbelievable (you canny buy class) and Barry could see it.

Fud. There's only one Sauzee ... :notworthy:

I met Dalglish at London City Airport and asked him for his signature - he muttered that he'd no time as he was going for his plane and effed off in the opp. direction. The tosser was still in the lounge 30 mins later.

Contrast that to Frankie Detorri who I met a few months later. Autograph, banter, a tip , handshake, best wishes etc - absolute legend

One of the friendliest would be ex goalkeeping coach Ian Westwater.. As my elder brother was on Hibs books until and including under 19's Westy was his coach.. every game he would come over and have a chat whilst warming the keepers up..

Also Fletch was in that team with my brother as was Kev McCann.. both gentlemen and frequently came and spoke before games..

On the odd occasion I would get to help "Big Jim" the ex kitman with the kit etc.. meeting mostly every player he asked who my favourite player was.. my reply Ian Murray.. as Nid walked in Jim shouted him across and he spoke for a full 20 minutes.. top bloke! Garry O is also a top bloke as was Maka and Boozy when i met them!

Jamie Mcluskey had to be one of the more arrogant players ive spoke to..

Can honestly say I've never met a player from Hibs that's not been friendly. Have bumped into a fair number of them over the years and most have been only too happy to talk about their time with the Club, especially some of the older guys who have been grateful just to be recognised (particularly one Malcolm Bogie). Among the others who I've found very courteous would be: Tommy Preston, (the late) Willie MacFarlane, Pat Stanton, Jackie McNamara, Ralph Callachan, Gordon Hunter and Keith Wright.
Top guys!

Also I met Lee McCulloch a few weeks back in a local pub and he was happy to chat and spent half his night posing for pictures and autographs with punters. He came across as a really decent guy.

As a side note I met Aiden McGeady in Malia a few years ago and (having had a few drinks) thought it'd be a good idea to boo him really loudly from only a few yards away. He didn't like that very much!

In many interviews for Radio Hibs/Hibernian TV over some 8 years, Jimmy O'Rourke and Sir Patrick of Stanton together were by far the funniest and most entertaining. They were a great double act. Pat played the straight man and Jimmy was the wisecracker!

Of the more recent players, I'd have to say that Stephen Glass (and despite some people's views) Michael Stewart I found were the two most knowledgeable and interesting to talk to about football.

Manager/Coach wise, I always very much enjoyed talking to Mark Venus. He always told it as it was and hid nothing.

A special mention too for big Derek Townsley who still keeps in touch to this day and also Paul Fenwick who was the only player to do his own radio show with some wonderful music!

Ian Murray for me..........he will definitely go far in management too. Cracking philosophy and temperament.

Of the old players, Keith Wright is a real gent. Quietly spoken but good sense of humour.

Older players/managers non Hibs related.......Jim Leishman is an absolute hoot and lovely man. Strangely enough so is Gordon Strachan......my claim to fame was that I watched a wee bit of the second half of the 1982 World Cup Final in his living room in Aberdeen. A good mate of mine said recently that he turned up out the blue for a school reunion, I think Craigroyston, and he was really humble and still knew everyone by name etc. Was more bothered about hearing what they were up to than talking about himself.

John Fraser ex player, then coach at the time. Remember my old man taking us to ER one time when we were heading up north on holiday the early 70's. John Fraser had just returned to the ground when we had landed and offered to take us into the ground via the south stand/dunbar end corner IIRC also.

Remember the old East terrace unbelievably huge as a kid from ground level when we walked in. He showed us around the stadium and, the bit I remember most, took us in the old Hibs dressing room which at that age was a dream come true. Great guy, as I remember him, he was probably busy but took time out for a dad and his two sons.

Can't remember the year exactly 73/74?? but I seem to remember there were lines painted (or still visible) from the 18 yd area to the touchline. I believe for the Drybrough Cup, some experiment/trial with offside only in the 18yd area :dunno: Can anyone else remember this or is this my memory playing tricks?

At the official party after the 2001 cup final, I told Nick Colgan he probably should've saved Celtic's first. Can safely say, completely understandably as it happens, that he's the unfriendliest Hibs player I've met.

Bunter
17-03-2011, 08:59 AM
Garry O is right up there. Me and junior Bunter were in getting tickets one day about 5-6 years ago and the wee man left the TO in front of me. Next thing I hear is, "You're Garry O'Connor!!" To which Garry stops and talks to him for a while. (He was back at ER for his lunch. Being a healthy professional, he had fruit. :greengrin) Junior then pipes up with, "I like bananas too." Garry then handed it over with a big smile. "Well that's for you," he said, "Keep eating them and you'll play for Hibs." He's still the wee man's all time favourite player.

Ally Brown is another top guy who always had time for a chat. always remembered the bairn's name and asked after him whenever we met.

Ian Westwater is a legendarily big friendly guy. No patter about him at all. Hibs wanted him to stay when his knees went, but he didn't want to take a wage when he felt he couldn't do his job properly. Great guy for a jambo. :greengrin

Jarrko Wiss was a top, top bloke who always had time for Hibbies. Down to earth, no airs and graces.

When I was younger, Westwater was one of our neighbours for a while. A couple of times he came out to have a kick around with the kids... though not as often as Paul Hegarty who was a legendary figure amongst the kids in my street and must have patiently given me his autograph at least 100 times.

Can't say that I've met many if any Hibs players. I did once see Scott Brown who was more interested in getting some spilled orange juice cleared up and finding out what time the Chelsea game started, but that's a different thread altogether.

Derek Townsley stayed a few doors down from my auntie when he played for Hibs, he'd chat away and seemed brand new.

Met Benji a few weeks after the CIS final, really friendly guy and spoke for ages.

Rob Jones seemed like a dick when myself and a mate spoke to him in the club shop, Andy McNeil on the other hand was very sound.

I've met King Franck Sauzee twice. Say no more!

Used to see Garry O'Connor when he had a house not far from me. Top, top lad. Guy's sound as.

Callum Booth is a very good mate of mine so I better give him a mention aswell!

Did you need to tell us twice?

May suprise people but Neil Lennon was one of the nicest players I met. Asked if he could phone my celtic supporting grandad up and he was happy to phone him and talk about Celtic for about 10 minutes. Think to this day my grandad still thinks it was a windup.

I've met quite a number of players over the years and I've rarely been anything but impressed by the positive attitude shown by the players towards the fans:

Around and about I've bumped into Jackie McNamara, Ralph Callaghan, Paul Kane, Gordon Hunter, Boozy, Pat Stanton, Tom McManus, Tom Smith, Jim Leighton, Brian Gunn, Alan Gordon (RIP), John Hughes, Franc Sauzee and Mixu amongst others and all of them have been a credit to themselves and been happy to share a chat with ordinary supporters like myself.

But the ones who stick out in the memory more than all the rest for me are Eddie Turnbull and Joe Baker (RIP). Both these guys are/were legends in their own lifetimes but showed a humility and kindness which left me with a warm glow!

These guys must have been fielding questions from awestruck supporters like myself for most of their lives but both of them handled themselves like total gents when I met them at supporters functions. Chatting away endlessly to me and many others, they seemed to give each and every one of us their full attention and shared their impressive knowledge and insight on a number of topics with an energy and enthusiasm which belied their advancing years. It was a real pleasure meeting these guys - experiences I'll always treasure and never forget - gawd bless 'em!:hibees:thumbsup:

Can't remember the year exactly 73/74?? but I seem to remember there were lines painted (or still visible) from the 18 yd area to the touchline. I believe for the Drybrough Cup, some experiment/trial with offside only in the 18yd area :dunno: Can anyone else remember this or is this my memory playing tricks?

You are right they experimented with the offside rule only being from the edge of the 18 yard box to the goal thus extended the 18 yard box line to the touchline.

The only time I was 'awestruck' in regards to meeting a 'celebrity' was when by complete chance, I found myself sitting beside Pat Stanton on the ill-fated flight to Athens. Funny, humble and just genuinely nice. Was great company and on subsequent occasions he never fails to stop for a wee blether. Top guy.

Grant Brebner: used to bump into him up town and again, always happy to engage in a blether. Very courteous and another regular guy.

Stuart Lovell - intelligent, articulate and well-mannered. A gentleman with a wide array of knowledge.

And a few surprises:

Ian Ferguson (the uberhun, ex of St Mirren, Rangers and Dunfermline): Bumped into him at East End Park, the day of his Pars debut. He had got lost in the labyrinthine corridors under the main stand and came into our wee hauf where we were brewin up. He sat doon, had a coffee and a blether before going to the changin area. Was gutted he was actually an alright bloke.

Sandy Robertson (Malky's laddie): lovely, life-loving laddie who used to enjoy a kick about in the meadows and havin a few pints up the southside. Not good when seriously pished but then, who is?

Andy Goram: Much maligned but on a one-to-one, just chewin the cud another decent gadge.

And a couple of guys who will no doubt get me pelters. Andy Webster and Steven Pressley. Two men who conduct themselves in public with dignity and who (despite the crap the yams come out with) are respectful of others. Could easily have spoken to these guys for ages about all sorts.

Met loads over the years especially during Gordon Raes time at ER as they all came to Bonnyrigg. Got to say my best 3 were Joe Baker ( got me a badge from Roma when we played them) , Jimmy Orourke (for many years but especially when he had The Corrie Inn) , and of course in Bonnyrigg the Goallie Andy Goram (best moment came with my unbelieving daughter when he greeted me by name in the High St in Bonnyrigg and being in the Calderwood when he came in after the World Cup in Italy still in his Scotland gear , dumped his bag in the corner and bought a round of drinks for everyone)

Agreed Fraser.

After the CIS Final when LS was MOM, we were heading up to George Street around midnight, started chatting to LS and he said he was going too. We all got on a bus up town and he sat with us and modestly chatted about the game.... Can't believe to this day he got on a bus!!!! Anyway we went to the same nightclub, and he got us into the VIP area for the players, one of my best ever nights, mingling with the players after lifting the cup......

]Ian Murray for me..........he will definitely go far in management too. Cracking philosophy and temperament[/B].

Do you reckon he will be Hibs Manager at some point??

Never really been a fan of ex players coming to the club they played for/support as manager, however Ian Murray will, IMHO, make a superb manager. Good outlook on the game, good leader, commands respect (and mind he is still young when you think about it).......more importantly he gets his message across in a composed, calm manner most of the time. Only gets angry when it's necessary.

I think he will be a Hibs manager one day and a mighty fine one. Certainly will be a fantastic coach.

Can't not mention Eddie Turnbull in this thread too. Wonderful man, grumpy so and so at times, but still has a right twinkle in his eye and a wee bit devilment.......loves Hibs and you could literally listen to his stories all day long. Someone mentioned statues outside ER recently.......I don't think there would be any other candidate in my eyes. Legend doesn't even cover it for me :agree:

Peter Cormack was great when I helped to run his fan club.We were invited to his home and his mum and dad were lovely and fair proud of their son.

Jack Reilly was like a big brother. He often popped down to my house if he nothing better to do.He was contented to watch the tele with my mum and dad even if I was out.

Pat Stanton and Lawrie Reilly have been lovely when I've met them.

Manager Bob Shankley introduced me to Bill Shankly when we were playing Hull City away. He asked me how I was getting home and when I said I was having to find the cheapest between rail and bus, he gave me a spare ticket for the train and there was I travelling up to Edinburgh with the team in 1st class. The lunch was lovely too!

Jim Leishman was great when my two grandsons mistook him for their grandad. He took us a tour of Almondvale and gave them photos etc. When I was at the friendly at Dumferline, I was in Hospitality and he recognised me and said ""look I'm not the grandad of your grandsons" and then introduced himself to Dave and said that he now know realised their mistake!:faf:

I met Freddie Arpinion after the 2001 SC Final when i was about 15. I don't think i've ever seen anyone so drunk. he was staggering up ER singing Hibs songs. Seemed like a top guy though, seen my scarf and insisted on taking me into a bar for a drink, his English wasn't the best but he came accross as a friendly guy.

Of the current team i've met a few of them but Graham Stack and Paul Hanlon stand out as the friendliest.

Other guys in football i've met who are nice guys are Neil Lennon:tin hat:, Craig Gordon, Christophe Berra and Alan Rough.

Other sportsmen i've met who are really friendly are Ricky Hatton (bought me a pint of Guiness in Coventry:aok:), Freddie Flintoff and Alex Arthur.

After last years game when Benji missed a penalty against Killie and i think we drew, Zouma was standing near the ticket office with 2 other guys that were foreign, most likely Moroccan. And i went with my wee brother to get an autograph and they were very friendly. One of Zouma's mates said, "do you not want my autograph?" To which my brother said no, and then he went "why not, i am Benji" and the other one was like "he's a fat, fat Benji!".

Probably had to be there to find it funny, but nice guys and a good bit of humour at the time, love their accent.

Bobby Flavell, the lunatic that was Bobby Thomson (great laugh) wee O'Rourke has been a pal of mine for a million years. Had a school job with Hibs when George Best was there, what a lovely man. Loads from other clubs aswell including then England Captain Bryan Robson who said Hi Duncan to me when I was in a pub with a young lady(i'd been introduced to him earlier in the day and bizarrly he'd remembered me and my name).....what a great opportunity to say, ****** off Bryan can ye no see am with a burd!

Joe Tortolano - Met him at a mates wedding and he was a really good guy. Later in the evening one of the musicians from the wedding band was in the bar boasting about playing in front of 2,000 people at some gig. I turned to Joe and asked the biggest crowd he'd played in front of. 60,000 at Hampden in the scottish cup semi final says Joe. Fair put the guys gas a peep so it did.

The first ex player i ever met was jimmy o'rourke. my dad took me to his pub near piershill when i was a kid. he was decent. in later life my mate played at st johnstone and i had the pleasure of having a drink with kano (very decent bloke) and also michael o'neill. I remember going out wi my best mate who was playing for st johnstone and waking up the next day in a drunken haze and going through to my living room and seeing michael o'neill sprawlled on my couch. We had spent a sat night in the 3 sisters then several clubs in george st, woke up steamin drunk then got back on it. I heard that darren dodds slept in a team mates car because he dare not face his misssus after that session.

Well my name and avatar give it all away im afraid...... GOD himself is the nices, loveliest Hbby I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He IS Mr Hibs and has a true and lasting connection with the club that will never die!

Lawrie Reilly is another perfect ambassador for the club and is a true gentlemen also.

Eric, God rest him, was a really great lad and had time for everyone.

Arthur Duncan was NUTS, a really nice man and very humble with it. Jimmy O'Rourke is a legend and a really great Hibby!

Le God, was unique in that he had it all, pride passion and knew how to conduct himself on an off the field.

Mickey Weir and Keith Wright are two of the nicest footballers i have ever met. They try to help everyone who asks them to do things for charity events and social nights. Hibs daft the pair of them!

Todays playing staff contains the usual mix of nice easy going persons and those id rather forget? Lewis Stevenson is a really nice, polite and easygoing young man.

While Kurtis Byrne is my typical wee irish bhoy with an infectious smile and a glint in his eye!

These are some of my favourite Hib's players past and present id like to thank them all for the memories they have helped provide me with. GGTTH!!! :flag:

Sad to say I ain't met any Hibs players...

I've told this story once on here but I hope no one minds me having another pop at it...

I took my class down to Tynecastle in 98/99 to do some drawing and to take a look at the stands (long story but hey ho). Lots of dads wanted to come and help out that day... Anyhoo, we arrived just as the first team was finishing up training and a few of them wandered past my line of kids. Now we weren't there to see the players but a lot of the kids were asking if they could possibly get their worksheets signed. They did it very politely but all of the players just wandered past and ignored them...one even sneered at them a bit but I won't mention his name as he plays for Rangers now. Steve Fulton came out, saw the kids and walked right up to us, chatted away, signed all the kids sheets and was a real gem of a guy. He really did go out of his way to make that day a bit special.

You're lucky he didn't grab one of the kids by the throat :agree: :bitchy:

Really not me a lot of Hibs players. Have met and talked to David Grof a few times, who was always very sound.
Met Wotherspoon and Palsson when I was out on Saturday. Just said alright to Wotherspoon who seemed a decent enough guy, and had a brief chat with Palsson who was sound too.

Houchen, Sneddon, Tortolano and Rae - sound

Collins, Jim Gray and Raymond Sparkes - less so

Also bumped into Gordon Chisholm and Enoch Showumni when they played for us under Collins.

Without a doubt Jimmy O'Rourke, met him many years ago when he was still playing for us and frequented Jock's Lodge when he had it. Haven't seen him for a while, last I heard he was doing after dinner stuff with Roughie et all, even after a few years he'll still remember me and have a good blether about the auld days, top guy.

Remember the Jocks Lodge days with affection.:greengrin
Jimmy was always on top form and had time for everyone - so another vote for J.O'R.
Murdo McLeod's a real-life gent too.

Mike McDonald always had time for the fans and was/is a smashing bloke.
Also enjoyed talking to Tommy Preston in the St Andrews bus station pub. He'd come over for a chat whenever we went in.

Craig Paterson was also a laugh when he caught the bus to Penicuik after matches. Didn't see him atall after he signed for Rangers though!

Surprised to see Mickey Weir only mentioned once. After a pre-season in Dublin my wee sis politely asked him for an autograph but he completely blanked her. Mind you she spent the rest of that evening being chatted up by a Shamrock Rovers player so she got over it.
