I'm getting to the point where I feel that they should scrap this embarrassing diddy tournament, or make it the de facto reserve competition it's probably really been for at least fifteen years.
The truth is that with another round of poor attendances today, nobodyy really cares. Cup competitions have become a bit like saving the panda, everybody thinks it's a good idea, but when it comes down to it, nobody can be bothered.
Because of our cup history, we're supposed to care more than most, but I see no real evidence for that. We were outplayed by Ross County today and the Hibs fans who bothered to show just grumbled vaguely about this state of affairs but didn't seem nearly as upset as they would be if it was 'real' football, ie: the league. Journo's, some fans and few players will trot out how much it means to us ('holy grail' is the latest tiresome cliche deployed to try to breathe life into this dodo tourney) but the truth is we're not that bothered, unless we find ourselves in the final whereby we rub shoulders with glory hunters in the quest for tickets.
It's a shame we can't bring ourselves to take more interest. I can recall when I started watching Hibs 30 years ago that drawing A'deen or Dundee in the cup at ER would mean about twice the size of gate for the corresponding humdrum league fixture.
It's not like the SPL has become more entertaining or more winable for us over this period. I feel by ignoring the cup, football fans have just helped the powers that be to con ourselves.
