Many on here will have experienced the highs & lows of Edinburgh Derbies, some fantastic games & some turgid affairs that have probably been consigned to the waste bin, my own personal favourite was the 6-2 demolition derby at Easter Road but to be honest i have also seen some fantastic games at Tynecastle that would poss run that game pretty close, Archibald scoring at the hibs end, Hunter doing likewise & of course the master Sauzee showing all how it should be done.

I suppose though the game that stands out for many on here would have to be the "Greatest game in history"...read on & enjoy ..

Team to take on the world

January 1st 1973

Hearts ..0 Hibernian ..7

Scorers- O'Rourke (2) Gordon (2) Duncan (2) Cropley

Hibs sprinkled the stardust of super soccer all over Tynecastle yesterday.....

And with magic touches reminiscent of Real Madrid, Brazil & the unforgetable Hungarians they climbed to the top of the first division.

Hearts were humiliated, baffled, run into the ground..for the simple reason that hibs can seldom have played better. This was football with speed, artistry & arrogance. This was glamorous, glittering football that had a huge crowd of 36,000 fans entranced yesterday. This in short was the brilliant football that will bring the missing fans back in their thousands.

Hearts may moan that they lost goals with incredible blunders, sure they did, but they lost them mainly because they were pressurised by the spell binding moves of hibs.

Golden

No praise can be too high for Eddie Turnbull's new stars. They were magnificent in everything they did, thundering shooting, accurate crossfield passes, imaginative moves & devastating speed.

Yet hearts could have stormed into a commanding early lead. Only four minutes had gone when they cutely stole downfield & Tommy Murray squandered a golden chance.

No sooner had the moans from the Tynecastle faithful died then Donald Park missed an even easier opportunity. And that was as far as hearts as a threatening force were concerned. Hibs took over .

Enchanting play by Alex Cropley, back to his international best & the astute Alex Edwards carved fantastic gaps in the hearts defence. The goal feast which was to put hibs level at the top with celtic & ahead on goal difference began in the ninth minute.

Shocking

A long throw in by Erich Schaedler saw the hearts defence begin their monumental catalogue of blunders. They hesitated & Jim O'Rourke darted in to hammer the ball high into the net.

In 16 minutes Alan Anderson slipped & the explosive Alan Gordon was right on the spot to make it 2-0. Duncan made it three after a shocking pass by Clunie. Cropley made it four with a tremendous goal & in 37 minutes a Duncan header had hibs on top of the world.

The second half, naturally was an anti-climax. Hearts brought on Lynch for Carruthers but it made little difference.

O'Rourke & Gordon made it 7-0 to give hibs their most wonderful victory over their Edinburgh rivals.

Polish

The only sour note was the booking of John Brownlie, again an outstanding hibs player, for a foul on Lynch.

But the verdict must be - Hibs are now playing with all the flair, polish & venom of a top team- & by a top team i mean one of the top teams in the world.

Hibs- Herriot, Brownlie, Schaedler, Stanton, Black, Blackley, Edwards, O'Rourke, Gordon, Cropley, Duncan..Sub - Hamilton
