Measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale which makes it the fifth biggest ever recorded.

We were on tsunami alert over here. Got about a 1.5 metre swell for a couple of hours, but that was the extent of it. NZ civil defence have expressed their dismay at the number of people who headed to the beach to watch it. As one radio presenter commented, it's natural selection in action. Hoping none of NZ's fault lines or volcanoes start to rumble! Who's the net poster in Wellington again? Wouldn't live there if you paid me to!!

Apparently the quake actually shifted the Earth's axis and the days are now a microsecond shorter.
