Sad to report that Alan Gordon now has a new colleague to supply the crosses. Brave Bobby Smith has passed away after a fight as courageous as we all would have expected. Thanks for a million memories Bobby, thanks for your commitment and humour, your friendliness and unassuming humility.

Terrible news.

It was only last Thursday (my time) that I posted a letter to him, thanking him for his services to Hibs and letting himknow that his commitment will always be remembered.and apprecaited.

I guess I'll never know now whether it reached him in time.

My thoughts are with his family.

RIP Bobby.

RIP Bobby

I had the good fortune to play with Bobby when Jackie Mac and Ralph C were the owners of Derby's and they used to have bounce games against his Musselburgh boozers, and playing with us was Bobby Smith [amongst other's] and it didnt matter what standard you were Bobby and the boys always tried to get you involved in the game, a gent on and off the pitch, will be sadly missed.

Sad news indeed, I interviewed Bobby a couple of week’s ago for a book I am writing on the careers of former Hibs players, he was really helpful and a good laugh.

Not only was he a great player for Hibs, he was also a stalwart for Leicester City and Dunfermline Athletic where he captained both their league winning teams.

I was fairly young when he had his second spell at Hibs, so I've only vague memories of him in green and white, however my fondest memories are from when he had his boozer in Dalkeith. Many an underage drinking afternoon was spent in the wee pool room at the back. Really sound guy.

Bobby first joined Hibs in 1971 after knocking back Celtic and actually had three playing spells at ER. His first ended in 1978 when he was transferred to Leicester where his team mates included Gary Lineker. Bobby was persuaded by Pat Stanton to return on loan and once that spell was over he went back to Filbert Street and ultimately captained the side. John Blackley then brought Bobby back permanently before he finally moved on to Dunfermline.

A great wee player, full of energy and no little skill, Bobby achieved the ultimate fan accolade when Hibs Monthly had a caricature of him on its front page with the long curly hair much in evidence - the caption read "Bobby Smith - The Perminator"

You brought a lot of joy to those who watched you play Bobby and you'll live on in Hibernian memory

Privileged to watch Bobby many times for Hibs and also for Leicester - 2 memorable City goals in Championship clinching promotion season 1980-81 against Newcastle & Charlton are fresh in the memory. As was an F A Cup Semi Final appearance versus Spurs at Villa Park in 1982.

First memory of Bobby was playing on the right wing in 72-73 when Mickey Edwards was serving a suspension. Later (?1974) turned in some good performances as a striker - good in the air for his height as I recall. Later developed as a midfield player and then a full back.

100% committed player. RIP
