I know that there's a few golfers on here, any want to give me a wee bit advice? :greengrin

I'm planning on playing regularly again and plan to ditch the old set of Pinnacles. The problem is after paying for green fees / membership my spending power is will be limited to around £100, give or take a score or two. Been looking around and have found these (http://edinburgh.gumtree.com/edinburgh/18/54226918.html) and these (http://edinburgh.gumtree.com/edinburgh/14/54273014.html). I'm probably about a 18 handicap so is there any point in getting Calloways or would I be as well getting a cheap (http://www.sportsdirect.com/dunlop-max-gents-package-set-steel-876070) brand new set?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Could an admin please change the title please.

Get the Callaway X14's Great club that I used for years. Do not under any circumstances buy a cheap new club.

Maybe you could pay a visit to the American Golf Discount shop at the Braids? They often have second hand sets of irons for sale and you'll able to try them out on the range before deciding to purchase. I'm sure the staff will provide you with good advice as well.

Alternatively you can pick up some really good bargains by browsing the "for sale" columns in the Scotsman or Evening News. (but I would tend to stick with the tried and trusted brands)

Sound advice! Either Callaway set is a bargain! :agree:

Thanks folks!!

I was already away shopping by the time anyone replied. I went to American Golf as suggested by GB this morning who had a set of second hand x16's 4-pw for £130, after talking with one of the sales staff he said he would throw in a Cleveland hibore xl driver £49 for £155 total, had a wee shot to try them out and was pleasantly surprised at how well I could hit them considering I've not hit a ball since August.

Did I get a reasonable deal? :dunno:

We have a golf social group but you can only access it if you fork out for private membership

We try to organise a couple of outings a year - last year we had a great day out at Turnhouse plus some of us had a superb WET :greengrin weekend in Dumfriesshire

Cheapest golf club you'll join

Quick update with the new clubs, what a difference decent clubs make. :agree:

I've had three counting rounds with them (to get my handicap), was always happy enough to break 90 so when I scored 91 I thought, well that was a waste of money. :bitchy:
Next card was an 83 with three 6's and a 7 in my card, then this morning I hit a 78 with 2 6's and a 7 in my card.
My only worry now is what handicap they give me.

There's a standard method of calculating a handicap:-

Your best card will count and your bad holes will be adjusted to a "two over par" basis.

So say for instance your seven was at a par 4 then for handicapping purposes it will only count as a 6.

Let's further say that your 83 was scored on a course with a standard scratch score of 70 then your allocated handicap will be 12 (83 adjusted to 82 because of that "7" and 12 being the difference between your adjusted score and the standard scratch score)

A pretty good effort if that is the first handicap you've ever obtained!! (I've a sneaky feeling you may have some previous experience of playing the game though:wink:)

So, my 78 will actually count 77? It's only Liberton and looking at the website it says "tee of the day SSS 64" I take that stands for standard scratch score? So I'll be 13 going by that. Fek me, what handicap does the B's start at?

Ah ha - I misread you're post and never noticed that your best score was 78! The same principle applies though - your worst scores at each hole will always be adjusted to a two over basis (5 for a par 3, 6 for a par 4 and 7 for a par 5).

So the chances are your 78 will be reduced even further. If you played off "Medal tees" for your handicap then the Standard Scratch Score will be 65 but if you played off the front tees then it's 64.(I also looked it up on the Internet)

So it all really depends if any adjustments are required to your gross score of 78. All I can say is that the MAXIMUM you can expect is 14 - and only if no adjustments are required at all!!

The seven was at a par 4, so I'm looking at 13. :grr: I'll never win anything off that (unless I find a bit consistency), the boys I play with are on a higher handicap and I've never beat them off scratch. :bitchy:

Thanks for your help GB and I'll defo get a round with you once I become a PM and join the golf section.

More good news then - contrary to popular opinion you don't have to be a PM to join the golf section!
