Very very very hard work. I did a junior one a number of years ago back when I was a relatively good swimmer. The swim was fine, but the cycle and run just about ended me. Would imagine it would be doubly hard for a full one. That said, one of my mates in my uni swim team does them often and loves them. Did the New Years day one in Edinburgh. The distances are relatively short - 300m swim, 20k cycle and 6k run but hilly course made it harder. As long as you are either reasonably fit or do a reasonable amount of training for the couple of months before you'll be fine though you'll be knackered at the end!

Not rocket science but do have a look at a website for tips though.
