Billy Bragg was at RBS headquarters today protesting about their intention to pay 1.5 billion in bonuses next month. He intends to withhold his tax payment unless the government caps the bonuses at £25,000. Nothing seems to have changed re the excessive bonus culture it seems, what a disgrace.

:agree: Civilisation as we know it will collapse if a penny less than £1.5b is paid out. :greengrin

Why didn't he go to the present HQ at Gogarburn? St. Andrews Square is just a branch.

...and for gods sake don't try withholding your tax. I've tried it and they don't like it...they will simply take you to court and might even take away your house.

Who is there to protest to at Gogarburn? He'd just stand outside the main entrance and make a twat of himself.

So he does it in the middle of the city where at least the general public would see him and it generates some publicity.

And in the RBS world 36 St Andrew Square is not '.........just a branch'

I suppose.

...and you're right about St andrews square being "not just a branch"...it's more of a social scene.
You wade through about five "greeters" to get to the twenty deep queue of customers for the two tellers. Behind them there are scores of people hanging about desks flirting with each other and doing not very much work.

The teller then has the nerve to ask me if the service is OK!

Absolutely right until the last sentence. If he's locked up and kept away from implements which (in talented hands) could be used to create music, the world will be a more harmonic place.

What's the counter-revolutionary deviant on about wanting to restrict bonuses to £25,000? The limit should be £24,362.

Completely irrelevant, but dunkey's years ago, I was in a record shop in Glasgow and ready to hand over eight notes and 99 pence for one of Billy's records, when the young man at the till said, "I'm afraid I cannot accept that. It says on the cover there that you should not pay more than £4.99 for this tape." [as indeed it did] So that's all I paid. And I love both Billy and the shop assistant for this to this day. So there.

I'm not really getting his point.

Does he want RBS to be non competitive to the point of not being able to repay the taxpayer??

He's another with little understanding of what he is actually complaining about.

I think it's the banks who don't really understand who is calling the shots, myself. Or maybe it's me who doesn't understand.

I can't see how the banks can argue for going on as before when their MO resulted in disaster.

You have to admire BB's pluck. He's a rock star right enough but he has been consistent with his left wing beliefs.

However, I think his criticism would be better directed at the government who allowed the city, banks et al to run riot these last few years.

What do you mean by going on as before? Do you know who would be getting bonuses and for what? Do you know who was responsible for previous issues and where they are now?

The system of bonuses which rewarded exaggerated risk-taking was responsible for 'previous issues'. Thats been demonstrated ad infinitum.

Hornby (HBoS) is chief executive of Alliance Boots with a salary of £500,000 and - wait for it - a bonus of 125% of his salary. So he's certainly paid the price for incompetence.

RBS could pay out £25k to every employee and pay out about 4 times what they will next month.

Oor Billy's not thought this through properly.

Yep. He's got a lot of time to think about politics as he wanders around his estate in Devon.
