Anyone else seen this yet?

Deserving of the enormous hype, best film I've seen in quite a while. I'm going to ludicrously declare it film of the year already.

Not seen it yet but I am definitely going to.

Mark Kermode is usually spot on. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00q0crz)

Might go this weekend actually.

I'm not Kermode's biggest fan but that's a very good summation.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it. :agree:

Un Prophete was the first film I've seen at the cinema which wasn't in English - I was quite apprehensive, as I didn't like the thought of having to concentrate on subtitles from start to finish. I also envisiged it as being a typical "artsy-Oscar" nominated film - they all tend to be tripe.

It was actually pretty good. Good storyline, well acted and well shot - I enjoyed it. Film of the year? Nah.

I don't want to be the one to pour cold water on things, but I had huge exepctations for this film. While it was very, very good, it wasn't flawless and falls way short of being my film of the year.

Firstly, the naturalistic acting perfomances were amongst the best I've ever seen. They really convinced you that they WERE the characters, and there was no affectation and showboating that often ruins gangster flicks.

I thought it was way too long for what it was trying to say, though, and I thought the jail-job on release repitition was uneccessary and laboured.

I started a wee hibs.net social group for folk who go to the cinema regularly and I've tried to invite you both on more than one occasion after I've read your comments on various films.

Unfortunately, Social Groups are only open to Private Members. You guys should join...

I posted my thoughts on Un Prophet, and the link to Kermode's review (nice work Broxi :greengrin) in January.

I went to see A Prophet last night.

Complicated, unpredictable, intelligent and full of intrigue. There were some scenes in it that had me wincing and the tension was palpable.

Great acting too. All the characters were believable and at no point did the plot let me down.

I think it probably deserves a second viewing, just to fully understand the different elements in the plot, but if you fancy a very thoughtful gangster movie, with a difference, this is for you.

I don't doubt that there will be a USA remake. I just hope they get a serious director to make it and they don't slaughter it in doing so again. Nikita/The point of No Return being an obvious example.

Take a drink and something to eat with you. It's 2 hours 35.

I agree with Mark Kermode's review.

Worth going to see? Yes.

I saw it a few weeks ago at UGC at Fountainbridge. Not sure if it's still there mind.

I really enjoyed 'Un Prophet' however due to critics reports beforehand I was expecting better. However, if I had gone in with no expectations I'm sure I would have loved it. I agree with the comment about it being overly long, a good editor would have shaved at least twenty minutes of the film, but overall if was certainly gritty and the acting was superb. Certainly a film I'll be renting when it comes out on DVD for another look.

'A Prophet' won best film in a foreign language category, at the BAFTA awards. 'The Hurt Locker' more or less swept the board in all the other categories. Have you seen it? I think I may buy it on DVD today.

Seen both of them.

'A Prophet' is really very good indeed.

'The Hurt Locker' was beautifully shot and directed, but I thought the story was a little bit lightweight.

Thanks for that, I will definitely be having a look at both. :agree:
