.netters who watched Hibs in the late forties/early fifties will no doubt recall a player by the quite wonderful name of Angus Plumb. Although signed from Armadale and with a very Scottish first name he was born in London.

Angus' claim to fame was that he once had a run of eight consecutive games in which he scored - ten goals in all but the poor guy found himself at ER at the same time as a certain group of players named Smith, Johnstone, Reilly, Turnbull and Ormond and so was soon on his way. Angus went on to play for Falkirk and then East Fife.

Any .netters got memories of Angus and if so, care to share them?

Note: Those ten goals were scored as follows

League 3/1/49 Hibs 3 Clyde 0 (Plumb 2, Combe)
League 8/1/49 East Fife 2 Hibs 3 (Plumb 2, Combe)
League 15/1/49 Hibs 4 Aberdeen 1 (Plumb, Smith, Cairns, Ormond)
Scottish Cup 22/1/49 Forfar 0 Hibs 4 (Plumb, Ormond 2, Turnbull)
League 29/1/49 Albion Rovers 0 Hibs 3 (Plumb, Smith 2)
Scottish Cup 5/2/49 Hibs 1 Raith Rovers 1 (Plumb)
Scottish Cup replay 9/2/49 Raith Rovers 3 Hibs 4 (Plumb, Ormond, Kean, O.G.)
League 12/2/49 League Celtic 1 Hibs 2 (Smith, Plumb)

My old boy used to tell me about Angus Plumb when I was wee and how unlucky he had been to be around at the same time as the 5. (Something he often said about Bobby Combe too).

Needless to say I (and my mates) treated it with derision - nobody could have a name as daft. Especially if he'd played for the Hibs.

Once I was able to find out for myself though I did indeed proudly verify to all that there had been a more than capable striker at Easter Road going by the name and that my old man was right.

An uber-hibby well ahead of his time, my Dad. :cool2:

Thanks for the reminder J.

You should look up Hamilton Handling while you've got the books oot!

I have

Quite a prolific scorer in his day :agree:

For example

25/11/1899 Hearts 1 Hibs 3 Handling 3
01/01/1901 Hibs 3 Hearts 1 Handling 3

He scored a fair few but I thought it was worth highlighting these ones :greengrin

Spot on - this was another weird name my old man used to drag up (not that even he was old enough to have seen him). I'm sure I remember reading he was the first Hibby to bag a hat-trick agains the sparryheids.

All the justification anyone would need for a username.

Would make a great forward pairing with David Duff. Giving a defence their just desserts and a bit of afters.

Sadly not HH

James McGhee
09/02/1884 Hibs 4 Hearts 1 John Lee, James McGhee (3)
30/04/1887 Hibs 5 Hearts 2 Tom Maley, James McGhee (4)
16/05/1887 Hearts 1 Hibs 7 James McGhee (5), Mick Dunbar, Willie Cox

McGhee was another who scored loads of goals but again, these ones are worth recalling :greengrin

Jeez, you would think we'd get fed up putting 7 past them on their patch!! Not a bad year 1887 even if it did result in the formation of the lesser greens!

Better change it to James McGhee then :greengrin

James McGhee scored home and away hat-tricks against the yams on 30/4/1887 and 16/5/1877

next was Allan Martin scoring away and home hat-tricks against the yams on 31/5/1894 and 25/8/1894.

Mick Dunbar and John Kennedy scored hat-tricks against the yams in 1888 and 1895 respectively before Hamilton Handling scored 3 in both 1899 and 1901.

There are sadder things than multitudes of hat-tricks against the plums.
Hamilton's two will do for me the now.

You ARE aware that around the time of the Second World War there was an Australian goalkeeper by the name of Norman Conquest?

And an Engish Test cricketer in the latter part of the 19th century called Julius Caesar?

And an FA Cup Final referee called Segar B.A.S.T.A.R.D?

"Who's the ref today, mate?"

"*******."

"I only asked....."

You're not getting a lot of info about Anguis Plumb, are you, John? Unfortunately, he was before my time.

Apart from the league games mentioned above, he only played in another 2 league games, so his record in the league was 7 games, 7 goals.
