Is this very harsh or justified?

For those who can't be bothered reading, the short(ish) version is a man gets a typical scammer email, so he pretends to be a priest in Sudan with $145,000,000 which he needs to get out the country, trying to scam the scammer himself. The scammer sends two guys across 1400 miles to help out, steal it basically, but these two guys are not heard from again, one turns out to be the scammers nephew. With this guy getting hell from his family, he goes to Chad to get them out of Jail (the guy who he tried to scam told him the guys were in jail, complete Colin Nish, hope you keep up:greengrin), he finds out he himself has been scammed, and is not heard from again.

Presumably the guy had to seriously wonder about going home telling his family he failed to find his nephew.
