Went to my mates house and walked in with a bottle of DIET Irn Bru. His mum went hi then just stared and went 'what on earth is that, you know that can give you cancer'. Immediately I was like wtf are you on about, but reading up it seems some say it can some say it can? Something to do with the sweeteners?
Can any doctors, dietricians or fitness guru's on here give me a definitive answer? Cos I stopped Irn Bru in favour or Diet Irn Bru on my dentists advice and now a lawyer is telling me that this is worse?
Last I heard you would have to drink hundreds of bottles a day before it was an issue.
Drinking too much water will kill you too!
Moral: nothing in excess.
Having been made to drink diet juices for the last 20 years...... I am still here.
There has been various statements made about this, mainly from the USA.
Apparently the drinks consortium have bought out the government and allowed these drinks on the market.
The main culprit is http://www.sweetpoison.com/phenylalanine.html
Also known as Aspartame. This appears to be not very nice, but if that was the case, why would it be permitted on the markets (this is a loaded question) ?

diet drinks arent good for people with epilepsy. the additive aspartame can trigger seizures and can effect the medication that sufferers take. some people cant have any diet drinks or foods as they can trigger seizures and reduce their seizure thresholds.
if you search on google for diet drink, cancer, medical conditions it will put you off eating or drinking for life:greengrin

I think if we knew what gave you cancer we could perhaps combat the horrible, indiscriminate disease more effectively.
As Jack said, everything in moderation.

It's not just Diet drinks.
It's a chemical that is present in all fizzy drinks that can be partly accountable for causing cancer. The again, if you do anything in excess the results aren't normally pretty.
I'm a smoker (hoping to give up though!), so I'll take my chances with the Irn Bru

:paranoid:
I've just chucked my 47 bottles of Diet Irn-Bru out of the window.
You can never be too sure with hysteria and hype.

Tell your mate's mum to stop talking a lot of reactionary pish.
You could also tell her to stop using her mobile phone, and walking near phone masts as they will give her cancer...:blah:

We're told that everything will kill us nowadays.
Remember the story about the chemical that could cause cancel in beef and tomato pot noodles (the only kind I eat :grr: ) and about a million other things? It would take vast quantaties to affect you.
You wonder how the human race has managed to survive for 10s of thousands of years.

Yeah, we've had fags, junk food, fizzy drinks and a sedentary lifestyle for centuries, how come this is an issue now.
I think the bigger problem with carbonated drinks is the fizz. A doctor at Ninewells showed a link to oesophageal cancer. As a result, you can't get fizzy juice in any part of NHS Tayside.

I appreciate your point re junk food and fizzy drinks. Food and drink was what I was referring to, not smoking, drinking, crossing the road etc etc.
There's always some study that says 'Too many eggs, sausages, steak, milk etc etc etc' is gonna kill you.
