Guy in my office had it done, said it had really changed his life.
He used to live alone, was always short of money felt lonely and ignored.Following the laser surgery he now has a lovely golden labrador for company,a free bus pass and the amount of help he gets when people see his white stick is unbelievable.

Since you asked I will have to tell you my mates story. He got it done and lost eye sight in one of his eyes, but I do beleive his eye was more or less beyond repair anyway. He has been told though that within the next 4 or 5 years there is a chance he may get it back again with this new type of operation they are working on in the US. They are currently trying the operation out on sheep or something.

I've always wanted to get it done and from what I've read the compications occur in around 2% of people that have had it done.
I believe you can only have it done once as well so I think I'm going to hang off for a few years to see if any new techniques are created that would allow you to have it done again.
I know someone who had it done and said it's the best thing they've ever done and their sight hadn't gone downhill in around 4 years.
It doesn't correct your sight forever and it will deteriorate as normal with age. Again, as I say, that's why I'm holding off just now, that and the fact that the worse your sight is the more expensive it is IIRC.
I was quoted around 1,000 an eye for -4.75 in each eye around 1.5 years ago.

Well, all the research says you won't got blind. The complications also appear to be better than having short sight.
I'll risk it. If it all goes wrong, my future posts will look something like this:

Had it done two months ago. It's painless, quick and life-changingly brilliant. I was nervous before going in but I couldn't believe how fast and straightforward it was.
I had lasik, is that your option?
I had it done in a high tech place in Dublin where they do sportsmen like Harrington the golfer.
Don't listen to the scaremongers, it's the best thing you can do and it saves all the irritation and hassle of lenses.
The only downside is that you can see how ugly Jambos are.

My wife had her eyes done through the Lasik method a few years back here in Germany. The most painful part about the OP was the metal clamps fitted into her eye sockets to ensure that her eyes remained steady during the OP. The OP itself was indeed painless. At the clinic we attended people came in, had the OP and then went home - some on their own, no problem.
It seems the younger you are (you're only 29) the better it will be, and the more you will have of it. As you get older, you will possibly/probably require glasses for reading. My wife thinks it was a great investment.
Good luck with the OP!

Bob & Peejay - thanks very much, this is what I needed to read. :agree:
I'm having Wavefront Lasik which is the most advanced surgery on the market. The guy doing it is one of the top surgeons in Holland so hoping it'll all go well.
I'll report back when done.....

I didn't have anything like that. It like a two glass slides pushed down on my eyes, and it was less uncomfortable than rubbing your eyes gently when you wake up in the morning.
I'm sure Kaiser, you'll soon be telling everyone how good it is. I've been a terrible bore about it, and have got a couple of friends to get it done. It's almost as good as Hibs.

This is exactly what I had at the end of last year. It cost me over £3k but I can honestly say it was worth every penny. Whilst the surgery is painless, it's still a little uncomfortable, but it's over so quickly it's nothing to worry about. There's also a little pain/discomfort when the anaesthetic wears off, but again, nothing to worry about. The worst bit for me was the fact the surgeon insisted on describing exactly what was happening as it happened - not for the faint hearted. As I said though, well worth it - My eyesight is in the top 10% of the population and it's so good to not have to wear lenses. I'd say go for it, but do some research on what can go wrong so you can wiegh up your options. I decided to ignore the horror stories and would recommend it to anyone.

Yes, you are better going high-end than to some discount cowboy who'll charge you five hundred quid for one eye and chuck in the other one free.
The best thing is the extensive barrage of tests they do beforehand to ensure you get exactly the procedure you need.
I never looked at any videos or wanted to hear any descriptions, I was happy not to think about that and put my trust in the surgeon.

The op has a good track record. A review by NICE in the BMJ found 90% achieved required visual acuity,1/200 found vision got worse,1/500 get corneal thinning that can lead to blindness but that some of those people were wrongly selected for operation. So as long as you don't choose a cowboy oufit you are unlikely to go wrong

Had it done today - amazing. Would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about it. After only 6 hours, my vision is better than it was with contact lenses or glasses and will only get better in the coming days. :greengrin

Yes, and it's not nonsense either, it really does continue to improve over the next few months after the procedure.
