I was going to ....mmmm purrrr....say that the Sunderland goal went in off a balloon today.

I wasn't aware that Barry Ferguson had signed for Liverpool.

Just seen the goal on MOTD, Bent's shot was heading straight for the keeper when it hit a big red balloon (not Nade) and deflected past him.

The balloon seemingly had a Liverpool badge on it, nay luck Liverpool. :faf:

The "goal" should have been disallowed if the laws of the game had been applied corrrectly.

Apparently as the football was deflected by an "outside influence" then the goal should not have stood.

The match officials will be the red faced balloons this morning!

Wasn't it a beach ball?

I'm sure I saw same beach ball in the back of the Liverpool net prior to the actual goal? It made me think that the Liverpool goalie had put it there to keep it out of the way and maybe it had come out due to it being windy? Maybe he should have burst it instead of putting it in the back of his goal?

I was going to say that they've already got a big balloon up front, but you've already covered that base.

Just watching the goals from yesterday, and they are questioning whether the Sunderland goal should have been given.
If you've not seen it - here it is (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnWeboQTfeo) - someone throws a beachball onto the pitch, the shot comes in, hits of the ball and ends up in the net...looks like it does take a deflection and confuses Reina.

Should it have been given :dunno:

:greengrin

Edit: oops...never saw there was a thread already on this (it had hearts in its title so i never bothered reading it :greengrin - Admins, feel free to merge or delete)

It should not have been given. The real ball was deflected of the beachball (an outside influence) so the goal should have been disallowed.

Being a fan of the Makems, I think that was a great goal and the player had great presence of mind to play a canon off the beach ball.
Had it been for Liverpool - defo should've been disallowed.

Seen the highlights and Liverpool could have taken a hammering! They should be thankful they kept it down to one. :agree:

Out of interest - does the "outside influence" also cover the ref? Not that I've known this to happen but what if a deflection off the ref ultimately led to a goal - would it be disallowed? :dunno:

I've seen plenty of times the ref's accidentally (?) played the ball and play just continues, so I presume the ref doesn't count as an "outside influence".

If the ref was an "outside influence", you could say the same for posts, crossbars and grass! :greengrin

The ref is counted as part of play so technically he could kick the ball into the net and it is a legitimate goal.

A few years ago I'm sure this happened in a game, maybe Sheffield United v Man City? The ball went in off balloons and no-one claimed it should have been disallowed then.

It was a Sheff Utd v Man City game but the ball did not go in off a balloon but they certainly did cause confusion.

Well if the ball hits a balloon surely that is still an outside interference with play?

There's been plenty discussion on the radio about this today, Di. The ref is part of the game (as are the posts, grass etc.) so the goal would have to stand if it was "scored" by him.

However..... is the wind part of the game?

Barrow 1 Plymouth Argyle 0 - 9/10/68
Massive unintentional deflection off the referee a few minutes from time leads to the only goal.
Result: goal stands, as it should.

Also documented in "Football's Strangest Matches" by Andrew Ward.

Wimpole 2000 2 Earls Colne Reserves 20
Ref deliberately scored the second for Wimpole 2000 with 'a sweet left-foot volley', when they were 18-1 down.
Result: charge of misconduct by bringing the game into disrepute, 7 weeks suspension, and ref's subsequent resignation. (The goal still stood.)

They certainly won't win the league this season, and it'll be a long time before they do again. As i've said, this club in decline will struggle to make the CL this year. Without Gerrard and Torres they are a mid-table outfit. Bleak times ahead for them.
