Having not been charged for getting on the bus that replaces the Edinburgh-Bathgate service on Sundays for about 3 months, I was surprised to be told by a Scotrail employee that I must buy a ticket in order to board the replacement bus.

But surely a train ticket is only applicable to rail travel and should be non-transferable. Can anyone clear this up?

You need a valid rail ticket as the bus is being provided at a cost to the rail company, which is why it's rail station to rail station and not random drops.

For all intents and purpouses the bus is a train :greengrin And if caught you need to buy a ticket accordingly.
