View Full Version : Christmas Number 1 Dead?

Ed De Gramo

The previous Xmas number 1's...

2005 - Shayne Ward
2006 - Leona Lewis
2007 - Leon Jackson
2008 - Alexandra Burke
2009 - Whichever mutant crawls out the X-Fixtor studio

is it fair to say that Simon Cowell and his band of sympathy bandits have ruined this once great tradition that saw the likes of:

Cliff Richard, Spice Girls, Bob The Builder, Mr Blobby, Band Aid etc..

The above artists had to fight it out with other artists/bands for the right to be number 1...now it seems, all you need is a sob story and a some talent in your pinkie and Cowell will brainwash the public into making you number 1...

Should the Christmas number one be retired? I think so as it's not even a contest anymore :boo hoo:

How would you stop there being a Christmas number one though? Abolish Christmas, or abolish the counting of record sales during that week?

Even Cliff was only bringing out songs about xmas time so he could rake it in (wasn't he? or is that just a bad memory)?

Will I be able to mention it at Xmas dinner?

So Gramo, you are not fan of Simon Cowell and his X Factor brand and the subsequent Xmas number ones which follow. But you rate novelty acts like Bob the Builder ahead of them? Strange....I ain't no X Factor fan but I rate anything that show has produced ahead of Bob the ******ing Builder.

Now, here is a wee challenge for you, go and do a bit of digging around and tell me who was the mastermind behind Mr Blobbys Xmas no 1.

I await your answer....

Only Leona Lewis  is better than Bob the Builder.

St winifred's school choir was the last band that truly made a proper xmas song. These new ones, are just diluting the quality we all crave. Get back to this type of act, and yes margo, we can grab that great tradition back from the manufactured tripe we get today.:faf:

Yeah, and Simon Cowell writes and produces all the X Factor stuff as well? No, he is simply the brains behind the concept.

Simon Cowell was behind Mr Blobby hit (http://www.virginmedia.com/music/pictures/toptens/most-controversial-christmas-songs.php)

I take it these Christmas classics are part of that great tradition you're referring to...

1996 Spice Girls - 2 Become 1
1997 Spice Girls - Too Much
1998 Spice Girls - Goodbye
1999 Westlife - I Have A Dream / Seasons In The Sun

I bought that single, my only ever contribution towards a Xmas number one. From memory it stopped The Darkness getting to the top that Xmas. Good.

The golden age of the Christmas single was the 70s imho ..... Wizzard , Slade etc etc. Most yuletide tunes since have been p@sh with the notable exception of Sir Cliffs Mistletoe and Wine which married life affirming poignant lyrics with a melody as lush as a Norwegian spruce.

St Winifreds certainly rocked the house with "Grandma we love you" but I wasnt aware theyd brought their gift of song to the Christmas single. Time to visit Spotify

Class turn of phrase, squire. Love it.

One of my least favourite no1s is the MadWorld rehash by Michael Andrews (featuring Gary Jules) - thanks, wikipedia. It was played literally to death.

In 95, it was Earth Song by Jacko and 93, it was Mr Blobby. One of them is now dead, Noel Edmonds is still alive. Where is the justice, I ask thee?

Having just checked the list, I don't think there's been an even half-decent Christmas number one since 1967. That doesn't smack of a great tradition ruined.

The only way to pretty much guarantee to trump it?

The number 1 Christmas Toy also launches a "must have" record with a special Willie Wonka style "Golden ticket" to star in some sort of reality TV programme.

Jeez, I never thought I'd see the day when I was grateful to Simon Cowell for something. His new approach to marketing music, by using television to increase the profile of his artists is one that would have seen the likes of the Beatles and Bay City Rollers reach greater heights if only they had known.

If only they'd had Simon Cowell for a manager, instead of that talent show judge Mickey Most! That was when you got real music in the charts and had money left for the bus home as well.

Good thinking, why with their own weekly TV show and a top songwriter - like Neil Diamond for argument's sake, they could have had the Xmas no.1 slot sewn up for decades. They don't manufacture groups like they used to.

I'd like to think that mentioning the Beatles and the BCR in the same sentence is the well known Hibs.net brand of irony.
