the student bashing/affirming thread reminded me - I was at the Stirling Uni campus in August for a game between an Edinburgh boys club team and a Falkirk F C boys team

none of the dads there remembered the Queen's visit to Stirling Uni when she got an 'idiosyncratic' welcome

anyone else remember this? I was at primary school but it caught my attention

Stirling was a notorious University at the time, with students thinking about the wider world, their place in it, and adapting radical ideas. Nothing like the youth clubs that Universities have become now.

If they tried to do a Paris 68 in Edinburgh now, the students would want taxis to the barricades and a cheap bar when they arrived. Far from being a counter culture, the modern student is a bastion of the establishment. I blame video games and Thundercats.

Her maj. visited Stirling Uni in 1972 and was heckled and sworn at by a fair number of students, some of whom may have been suitably refreshed

I vaguely remember photaes in the sunday post of assorted longhaired students with a beer can in one hand and giving the vicky with the other

It seemed to be the first time she was ever given a less than fawning reception and it came as a big shock to her and the entourage

rumoured to have cost Stirling uni millions in investment/patronage etc

true bit:

A bloke I know (bit of a space cadet) was a student at Stirling on the day of the visit

he was sitting in his room writing an essay on metaphysics when the monarch was ushered in by assorted toadies trying to get her away from the pist graduates

he said that a fairly stilted discussion about his essay on philosophy ensued

slightly contrived bit:

do any other posters know someone who has been involved in a disccussion about

what it means between a daydream believer and a fleeing queen?

(c) calendar thread

I overheard that discussion. Far from being stilted, her maj interrogated your pal very, very thoroughly about his essay, with much reference to her favourite Scottish philosopher. She picked every nit that it was possible to pick in your chum's presentation of his work.

The conversation was one between a daydream believer and a Hume-combing Queen.

I think you're mistaken - wrong philosopher

my neebur was actually analysing that well known treatise - 'the answer to Mr Burke's attack on the french revolution' - published 1791

- and that, as a male student, he was annoyed at the interrruption to his study

has anyone else's pal told them its a paine to have a monarch interfere with the rights of man ?

I heard from an old wag that a group of drunken students started chanting "we all fancy a line up with the queen..." to the tune of Yellow Submarine.

I hate when these philospophy jokes start up, because I know Foucault.

Trou, sseau true. Feel free to Russell up some alternative topics. And plenty of them - we don't want no Hobbeson's choice. Is Locke making an appearance at ER the day?
