Can a US President, in office for only 8 months and presiding over two current conflicts, really be justified in winning this prize over others who have been working for years and decades?

Or is this a symptom of the 'Obama-mania' that has swept the globe?

When I heard this I thought it was a bit strange but I do not know anything at all about him pre president, did he do many things worthwhile?

My immediate impression is that it was granted because of Obama-mania as you put it. However, as someone has pointed out, I'm not aware of any of previous work he has done.

Does this devalue the label of winner?

The Nobel Committee said he won it for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples".

Thats what happens when you have Meerkats judging it :faf:

Please remember that Dr Henry Kissinger, the terror-bomber of Cambodia, Menachem Begin, ex-Irgun terorist, and Anwar Sadat, bosom buddy of Nasser, totalitarian thug and emphatically NOT a nice person, all received the same award.

Kissinger's award led Tom Lehrer, the satirical singer/songwriter, to retire, on the grounds that after a Kissinger Peace Prize there was nothing left to satirise.

It's clear what happened now - it was a typo.

They intended to give it to OSAMA.

He won it because he isn't George W.

Having heard Obama on the radio this evening, he did sound genuinely embarressed.

Obviously, I think the same as most folk. It's an unwarranted award and, for all the Nobel politics and scandals that have gone on in the past, takes the biscuit.

He won it because he isn't George W.

:agree:

He has taken the US on a different tack with their foreign policy. He is to be commended for that but, what he has or more to the point, hasn't done in comparison to previous award winners would seem to suggest that it's more about him as a personality cult than his achievements, such as they are.

Brown will be furious though. I thought he said that he saved the world?
