View Full Version : Sun drops support for Labour
Tomorrows front page will see The Sun back The Tories for the next election and pledge their support behind them.
Is this now the end for Labour, this week they seem to be getting it from all angles, sorry should I say Brown seems to be getting it from all angles.
Starting to feel quite sorry for him to be honest.

In electoral terms - Brown is a 'dead man walking'
He blew it IMO the minute he decide NOT to call a snap election when he became leader. A decision which made him look cowardly and weak.
Unfortunately I think Cameron will win by default as he doesn't even need to try.

Blair bailed out when the ***** started hitting the fan...and Brown's ideas aren't exactly helping matters.
There needs to be a change..whether it be Smeato or Cameron :greengrin

The Sun was always going to switch but the timing is designed to counter any 'bounce' from Brown's speech today.
A monumental kick in the baws.

No coming back now, this week has put the final nail in the coffin.

The thing I find most depressing is a comic book like the Sun can have such an impact on important matters like this.
"Cor blimey, this is our Tory page 3 girl. Doesn't she have big jublies?".

From what I can see, Cameron is getting plenty of support from the media. I think some of the treatment Brown has had recently is the work of cowards kicking a man who think is down. I watched some pygmy try to take him apart on the breakfast news today, despite him answering everyone of her questions she was still determined to stir the sh*t.

I don't feel sorry for him at all.
Where was he when Equitable life went bust and thousands lost massive amounts of their pensions? My dad suffered badly in this, and Brown wasn't even interested in the slightest with not even a hint of response to letters.
He presided over the 10p tax farce which hit those on low incomes hard.
He hasn't been hard enough on bankers with some of them receiving bonuses again already.
He's got us into record levels of debt, and wants to keep on spending.
The guy is finished and it is all his own making. He is a coward that deserves everything that comes to him.

But they don't really, do they? They wait until it's a foregone conclusion, then nail their colours to the mast - hey presto, looks like they always influence it, but all they do is back the favourite every time.

On the BBC website it says The Scottish Sun isn't yet backing the Tories but has dropped it's support for Labour but supports the Union so won't be backing the SNP.

:agree: The sun isn't leading the way here in setting the voting pattern, it is merely acting to shift support towards the party that the majority of it's readers now favour, and at a time where it will have maximum impact on Labour to boost sales.

Blair bailed after years of Gordon Brown and his allies undermining him and jockeying to get Brown into the top job.

Remember that the Scottish Sun has backed the SNP in the past (they are allowed to take a separate editorial line), so I imagine they are just keeping their powder dry for the moment!

While the gutter press and mass media don't single handedly win elections, there's a fair few people out there who read those rags and take it in as "news". If the Sun tells White Van Man to vote Tory to keep those Darkies and Immigrants out the country, then I'm pretty sure plenty of their readers will do as they're told.

So essentially, quite shockingly right-wing rag drops support of quite shockingly right-wing party in favour of another quite shockingly right-wing party when it becomes patently clear that the latter shockingly right-wing party are going to win the next election...
This can only be a momentous event in the eyes of Labour Party apologists who have bought unreservedly into the idea that their reception in the Tory press is a barometer for how good a job they're doing.
I think any residual respect I had for the Labour Party vanished a couple of days ago when their conference decided to give Peter Mandleson a standing ovation for the most vapid, insipid, repulsive and downright creepy speech I think I've ever heard. And a day or so after he had said he'd work for the Tories when they win the next election. **** me, are they really that browbeaten?!

I suspect yet agan that "Scottish" Sun will wait and see who to back, in order to split the vote among who is the biggest risk to the UK Editorial preferred candidate...
If the SNP look like opposing the Tories more in Scotland, you can be sure they will back labour to try to deminish that SNP vote, and vice-versa.

It's not as if I needed another reason not to buy The Sun, but I'll add this one to the list.
Labour are screwed, however I did enjoy Lord Kinnock taking Nicky Campbell to bits on Five Live this morning.
I've never voted Labour in my life, but if it comes down to it, I'll vote almost anyone to stop Cameron, Osbourne and the rest of the Bullingdon tw@ts getting in.

Couldn't agree more. If the Labour Party chooses to abandon every principle it ever had and become a Tory Party Mk2, it can't be surprised when it's buggins turn, and the next bunch of right-wing pricks to rape the country come into power.

What happens when Scotland gets another government it didn't vote for?
Nothing I suppose, just like when Newcastle gets a government it didn't vote for. I suppose the SNP will seek more powers for the Scottish parliament but it doesn't look like enough people really want independence for that to happen.

Just been on the Beeb website and you may be interested to know that the Scottish Sun says it too agrees that Labour has lost its support but it is not of the view that the Tories are the right party either!!
I suspect that they may well come out in support of what is called 'devolution max' being an arrangement where the fullest possible powers are transferred to Holyrood, but short of full independence.
For starters, that'll do nicely:greengrin

This is quite a good article on the whole subject by Seamus Milne http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/sep/30/new-labour-rupert-murdoch
It seemed to have slipped under a few radars but the conference also signed up to bring in free childcare for 2 year olds and universal care for the elderly. A case of 'Labour being cast free from Murdoch's chains', perhaps?
Sky/yougov are also reporting the Tories lead being halved, from 16 points to 7 points, in the last week. Maybe its not so cut and dried after all?

Once the debate opens up, it will be interesting to see how Tory claims and apirations stand up to scrutiny. Labour has attempted to shift the discussion away from personalities and onto policy.

we're only 7 months from an election, and i haven't a clue what the Tories plan to do in power because they say hee-haw.
these debates will only be weeks from an election and people by then will want to know exactly what they plan do with power before they grant it to them imo.
the focus may well be on them.

Its pitiful - the Scottish Sun can't ask its readers to vote Labour cos the English Sun doesn't support Labour. And they can't aske them to vote Tory cos its a wasted vote in Scotland. And as they've they've nailed their colours to the Union mast, they can't ask them to vote SNP. Absolute joke of a publication.

Been there before with the Sun haven't we though....anyone remember the "If Labour win tonight will the last person in Britain please switch off the lights" headline.
Only for them to switch to Labour a few years later...oh and SNP in Scotland to try to dilute the Labour vote!

When I posed a question (in response to the_todd on the same point) if all WVM were uneducated racists I never got a reply.
On a separate note, why weren't labour slamming the Sun for their support given that they're just a rag who know nothing about equality prior to now? Another example of slimy politicians. I hope that HH gets hit by a bus, she is cringeworthy.

Excellent article as usual from Milne.
However, it just goes to show how utterly reactive and soulless the Labour Party have become.
