Both great events but should Britian be looking after number one rather than giving out Millions to Africa etc?

No, millions of people needlessly die in Africa from very basic things. People who have recently been unemplyed as victims from the credit crunch in no way need support the same way that people in Africa do. It might just be the case that less money is raised in these events this year though from the crunch

Certain areas in Glasgow have a lower life expectancy than the majority of those in Africa...

There is enough in the World for everyone's need, but not enough for everyone's greed.

Not too sure if its lower than the majority of people in Africa but compare stats to clean drinking water, HIV or child mortality and its obvious why money goes to Africa.

Maybe a slight exaggeration, but it's certainly equal, with quite a bit of Africa being better.
In Glasgow the disparity is among the highest in the world with life expectancy for males in the heavily deprived Calton standing at 54 – 28 years less than in the affluent area of Lenzie, which is only eight kilometres away

It's general practice that you sort out your own home before bitching about other peoples. Personally, I don't really care as long as people don't delude themselves into thinking Britain is so perfect, and that aid for Africa doesn't take precedence.

Sort out the corruption and greed in a helluva lot of African countries and they would not need the aid.:agree:

Theres hundreds of good british charities where the moneys stays in britain. Likewise there are hundreds of british charities set up to aid african and other countries.
Just choose which, if any, you want to give to.
Simples!

I believe that we should get our own house in order whilst helping other where we can.
I know that sounds a bit greedy but what's worse, living in one of the richest economies in the world and have to beg for food and sleep under a bridge whilst watching thousands of other people walk by you everyday without a second though or be born in a country where you know no difference. Now, the begging thing is a whole different ball game but the amount of money sent elsewhere could be used to ensure that everyone in our country has a roof over their head and food on the table.
I have what I suspect is a contentious opinion. Don't breed in conditions where you know your kid is going to die by the time it is 5. Now, I know it is human nature but it's catch 22 for me.
Also, if the world wanted to help Africa it would. The simple fact of the matter is that the world could not sustain the whole continent of Africa if it were to become fully developed with life expectancies similar to the western world.

a) You don't have to give money to charity: it's a voluntary thing
b) Britain (Government) gives huge amounts of aid to many countries including Africa
Chiildren in Need/Comic relilef is a voluntary thing, so if you don't want to you don't have to...

true, but if you don't then you're made to feel like an uncaring capitalist swine.
It's like the folk shaking the buckets asking 'Support Marie Curie Cancer Care?'. Is it possible to answer no??

Compare our own mess that we are in and compare the mess that "the other" are in. On the scale of need and human misery, which do you really think is worse?
Therein lies the answer.
PS - a lot of the money stays in the UK at any rate.

And don't forget that it also has the fortunate effect of allowing 'us' to go merrily on our way exporting poverty and dissent all year round so long as we salve our guilty consciences once a year by watching hour upon hour of seriously **** telly, maybe donating a fiver at the end of it and giving ourselves a hearty pat on the back...
And it gives Richard Curtis a (admittedly tenuous) reason to exist.
