View Full Version : The wrong formations.

Last season under mixu, it was clear we were playing the wrong formation, right from the first friendly games. Yet week in week out, he persisted in doing so. We did not then have the players to play his system, but that did not seem to matter to him, stubborn right to the end.

A new season, a new manager, and again we have a system that is not working. Yes we have 9 points, more down to the strikers at the club than any formation we seem to be playing imho.

Again we have no width, something we complained about last season. Our full backs are supposed to supply this, but they are converted centre backs. They are both not the best in their first touch, that gives the opposition time to shut them down. They are both not what i would call that comfortable on the ball, or running with the ball, so that's a hindrance in the way yogi wants his full backs to play.

If we are to have full backs who are to be attacking full backs, then get the right kind of players in, before you try this system. Until such times, play the players to their strengths, make us harder to break down, make teams have to create their own chances, rather than them feeding off our mistakes, and let the quality players further up the pitch try and win the games for us.

We don't have the players for any other formation than 4-4-2. This 3 in midfield just does not work, A, when the 3 we have up front, wont battle back and help. B, the 3 in midfield are always out numbered, and C, the 2 players we want to join in further up from the wide positions, are just not very good at doing so.

Lets get back to basics, and get the players in that CAN do the jobs at full back, in the next transfer window, or the one after that, but until such times as we do have those players, lets play to OUR strengths, and not make it easier than it has to be for the opposition.

Agree with all of this G, with the caveat that even with 4 in midfield we don't have the bite we need or if we do (Bamba) we lose the distribution (Miller/McBride).

In other words, no marks still need to be shifted from the squad to make room for more quality stength in depth in midfield which can give us bite AND distribution.

We will have to play a 1-10-0 on Saturday to get anything from the game.

I'm inclined to agree with the original poster, but I think a change in personnel may work out a little better. I'd put wotherspoon at RB (much more comfortable on the ball) and persist with Hanlon or maybe Lewis at LB. But something has to give with this midfield. Get Hogg back in defence, and get Bamba or Murray in there, winning the ball and nailing anything that moves, not too sure who gets dropped, but my ideal team would be.

Maka

Wotherspoon Hogg Murray Hanlon

Miller Bamba Cregg

Zouma Riordan

Stokes

If was 4-4-2, would put deek up front, as is, but tuck in zouma and sack Cregg for Galbraith.

Its broke, and we need to fix it, pronto.

The simple fact of the matter is, we do not have the type of players required to play a three man midfield.

But while we are fixing our midfield, can we also fix the defence.

Hibs were better last night with the 4-2-3-1 that played most of the game than the 4-4-2 that finished. They lost the midfield completely after the reorganisation from the Galbraith / Rankin substitution.

Thats because they had the wrong people playing the 4-4-2. Wotherspoon at right back? No thanks. 4-4-2 is the easiest formation to play. We have a lot of new players that need to gel, play 4-4-2 until they gel then change things if needed. 4-4-2 has probably been are best formation this season when we played celtic.
