Yup.

Been working in weegie land a while now. See a heck of a lot of common denominators.

Genuinely believe that Leith is closer to Glasgow in nature and appearance than it is to Edinburgh.

This is not meant to be a negative proposition.

Good selection of decent bars, good selection of restaurants, friendly non pretentious people, and plenty of women who are up for a laugh

Yes. I have been all over Glasgow with my work. Every other corner reminds me of a part of Leith - good and bad.

My grandparents and a lot of the old Leithers I know speak in a slang similar to that our Glasgow counterparts. As you say, there is an engaging nature to Leith that is shared with that of Glasgow (missing form my neighborhood)

We have a river, with both trendy and rough parts based around it.

A number of bleak pubs and great ones too. We are both industrial and gritty.

I work in Glasgow (Partick), and lived and worked in Leith for many years, and I can see where the OP's coming from.
As an aside; Henderson Street now has more Michelin stars than the rest of Scotland put together.

Add to that an aging population, the old bond, dock, shipyard workers.

Whatever.

Leith is so much better in a billion ways. Not least because both Hibs and I live there.

There are also areas in Edinburgh that fall into that category...fountainbridge and dalry are also self contained communities in the same way Leith is. Tight-night with industrial pasts which they are aware of and they are no less wellcoming.

You say leith is a condensed glasgow and there's something in what you say.

However, if you look at edinburgh it doesn't fit into any boxes. Areas of poverty and deprivation only a stiff wedge away from houses that boast £1million asking prices.
Not unusual but there are too many occurrences for that to be normal.

No.

Leith is an historic East coast port with a long history. Glasgow is an industrial conurbation which didn't exist in any significant way 300 years ago.

The people of Leith have strong links (sometimes against their will) to the Capital city of Scotland. Glasgow is a massive UK city, and much of its development has depended on its links to England and beyond.

Glasgow is riven by sectarianism. There is very little evidence of it in everyday life in Leith.

Most importantly to me, Leithers have an East Coast mindset, and Weegies have a West coast mindset. You wouldn't describe Leithers as gallus for example - there is more a quiet pride in self, whereas Weegies prefer to large it and swagger about in garish clothes.

WHAT?????

Show me the world class gig venues in Leith, along with the world's greatest football stadium in Glasgow and you might be onto something.

Each is different - not necessarily better or worse - from the other in hundreds of ways, and I love them both, but no way - IMO are they similar.
