England's Premier League clubs have agreed new rules on the number of "home-grown" players in their squads.
From next season, each club will, at the end of every transfer window, have to name at least eight "home-grown" players in a squad of 25.
To qualify as home grown, a player will have had to be registered for at least three seasons at an English or Welsh club between the ages of 16 and 21.

Good news for the English International team (they're going to win the World Cup, you know) but why aren't we included and how will this affect the Scottish game?

EPL squads restricted to 25. Plus each club will, at the end of every transfer window, have to name at least eight "home-grown" players in a squad of 25. To qualify as home grown, a player will have had to be registered for at least three seasons at an English or Welsh club between the ages of 16 and 21.

Interesting development. Worth trying up here?

these rules will be imposed in scotland as well, the SFA generally just follow suit with what the english decide rather than being forward thinking and pro-active in improving the scottish game.

Good point! But I presume that's what they intend though. Otherwise why bother?

most clubs already have that kind of number of Scottish grown players in thier squad, would be a pointless piece of admin really

I think only the OF and Yams wouldn't be able to meet these requirements each season, but under current financial constraints we'll all have more Scots in our teams.

Oh. And the Yams could still bring in lots of teenage Liths and keep them for 3 years before qualifying fo the 1st team.

Wait for even more complaints from European clubs about youngsters being poached for the EPL.

Think it's a bit of a compromise.

I doubt they could specify they were English as that would breach European law on freedom to work within the EU.

By relating the rule to young 'home-grown' players I'm guessing that will include a lot of English players though. The likes of Arsenal have the capacity to have youth squads filled with players from all over the world but that's not true of a lot of the EPL. The limit to squad size is the key IMO.

It was on about this on SSN news last night, the total numer of 8 players don't have to be English (or Welsh)...

The example it made was Arsenal - players like Fabregas, Van Persie, Clichy etc counted as they had been registered with an English club at a young age. They pretty much walked it in terms of 8 players in the squad, despite them often fielding a team with no Englishmen....

Chelsea on the other had, despite having a good few English players in the team (Terry, A. Cole, LAmpard will play every week with J. Cole probably joining them when fit) only have 8 in their current squad who comply with this new ruling - Mikel, Kalou and a couple more! may get interesting due to their transfer ban though.... They have the least in the league.

Liverpool have 9, but they were described as most at risk as theres only really a couple of them who are anywhere near the first team.

Maybe Wenger's policy of snapping up the best young talent at a young age from Europe will now begin to bear fruit?
