Is anyone really surprised that Diageo have decided to go ahead and close both the plants?
I personally think that the Scottish Government getting involved was just delaying the inevitable, Diageo had made their mind up and couldn't give a flying one about their staff and the effects on the surrounding area.

:agree:
Even if they employ another 400 people in Leven, it doesn't take away from the fact of the 900 at Kilmarnock and the others at port dundas.
My Nieces man works there and so the future for them is not so rosy
Shower of *******s these big time global businesses.

It will just about kill this town. The 400 jobs in Leven are 6 or 9 month per year contracts so that equates to 2 or 300 full time positions. £2,000,000,000 a year profit not enough for them. I wont be buying another of this companies products there is always an alternative.

:agree:, played the game and tried to be seen to be considering all available options but decision made some time ago.
Not great for the people of Kilmarnock.
Very sad to see such an iconic Scottish institution all but pull out of Scotland.
As for the SNP its just more political jestering [sic] from them.

If the SNP government had done nothing the Labour Party would have had a go at them for doing nothing. Because the SNP tried to do something the Labour Party have a go at them anyway. Scottish Labour are certainly finding out the joys of being in opposition.

You're probably right, they're all as bad as each other, its always someone elses fault.
Now where's that expenses claim form?

If they are lucky they will be in opposition for a good while. If they aren't, I can see them being pushed into third place by the Liberals. They just can't seem to get a grasp of what Scottish politics is about.

The irony is that the rescue bid by the Scottish Government was a cross-party plan. Gray was anonymous (as usual) when it came to stating the case.
For Labour to criticise the SNP for the failure of a rescue bid, while hoping that nobody realises that Andy Kerr was part of that plan really shows how desperately opportunistic they have become.

The 'Rescue Plan' was never going to work, pure political theatre to cast Diagewo as the fall guys. They would have much better off spending the time discussing ways to bring differnet work into the areas effected.
It's sad that Scotlands failure to invest in making Scotland a top place to be for business is covered up by calling Diageo bad names becaue they decide to run a profitable business, petty party politics and first ministers taking part in a 'protest' rally.
I find it very strange that the Scottish Gvt could suddenly pop up with millions to throw at diageo and parcles of free land to give to a multi national when they decide to rationalise to maintain profitiablity but couldn't make this money and land available BEFORE to allow such areas to diversify away from a single employer.
Blame Diageo if you want, personally I don't think it is any governments job to tell a mutinational how to maintain it's business and profits, but to me the real culprit here is Scotlands ongoing inability to see the big economic picture and to invest in the required people, technology and infrastructure to make the right environment for a truely modern, balanced and succesful Scottland PLC to be created.
There will be a total of 900 jobs lost in the west of Scotland...but 400 will be created in Fife by the same company.
Bausch and Lomb are getting rid of 500 jobs in Livingston...the same number in total as Diageo are axing but where's the outcry?
I might feel more sympathy if the west coast media gave as much attention to what goes on in the forgotten backwater that is the rest of the country a bit more often.

:agree:
The short-termism of all political parties has one focus and one focus only .. re-election.
Not one party has the long-term vision and strategies for the necessay macro changes economically or socially.

Where was the political outcry during the other 1000s of jobs being lost in Scotland? It was just a political game being played and just gave the Kilmarnock and Port Dundas employees false hopes.
Diageo have invested millions in their Scottish business throughout the years when most have moved out. Do the likes of Browne and Swinney really think that they can tell a global business how to run their business? Their plan would have still lost Scotland 500 jobs (just not in Kilmarnock) and wouldnt have brought any real savings to Diageo.
The question should really be why there is no alternative employment in Kilmarnock.
If anyone thinks that businesses that make a £2bn profit will be swayed by a couple of wee scrotes like them then they are living in cloud cuckoo land.

The reason there is no alternative employment is that just about every factory in this area has closed down with very little to replace them.
