Can I be the first to point out that people seem to talk about Christmas earlier each year? (Morrisons have got their selection boxes out so that people can start spending half their annual income in good time for the debt collectors coming in Febuary).

On a slightly related note (though not necessarily Christmas), I was in Borders yesterday, and there's a Starbucks upstairs - my better half and I usually meet on a Monday and Wednesday when she finishes work for a coffee.

They had Halloween biscuits on sale yesterday! I couldn't believe it!

Someone in my area sent out an e-mail asking what we wanted to do for christmas and we'd need to book it now if we wanted somewhere good.

I refused to reply to a christmas invitation on the 01 August. :grr:

After the histeria about getting something booked they settled on a lunch on a silly little boat leaving from Ratho for 3.5 hours with the option of staying in a premier inn / travelodge after for the small sum of £90. :faf: Alternatively get taxis back into town / home from Ratho.

Erm, no.

Corus Hotel at North Queensferry was advertising Christmas Nights at the start of July! It's mad.

i think its what people like really, someone mentioned above they like to spread the cost out and start early witch i can understand. how many people leave xmas presents to the last week when shops are mobbed and or are sold outm of the things you need?

I must admit, that my Christmas shopping is usually done by November - means that if I go shopping in Edinburgh around December, I can relax and enjoy the bussle, without getting caught up in it all!

Just bought my other half's gift earlier this evening actually!

We used to have an old bag for a Primary School teacher - one of these hags that really wasn't cut out for teaching, particularly teaching boys, or possibly just for teaching me :greengrin

Anyway, the ONLY good thing she installed in the classroom is that you were point blank forbidden to say Christmas until the month of December. I honestly thought Christmas was the "C" word until the age of 13/14 because of this!!!

I know commercialism is the way of things, and its a competitive market, and companies have to try harder to reel in customers earlier etc etc, but is anyone else almsot forced into a "Bah Humbug!" style spirit around Xmas because Xmas actually begins some time in mid-July???

It's complete overkill - I - along with all the other millions of UK consumers - KNOW when Xmas is and we know that tradition dictates we buy gifts.

The likliehood of me - and I imagine others - doing so from any given shop decreases somewhat if said shop has been trying to drill this well-known state of affairs into my head for the 4 months previous!!!

I'm not in any way religious, but if we are going to keep calling it Christmas (Birth of Christ) maybe the companies could display a modicum of respect for what this means, and lay off the blanket advertising until late October/November time.

If not, could there not just be a bit more honesty and call it "The Big Fat Annual Spending Orgasm" because that's what Xmas is these days, on the high street anyway.

No real difference between Christmas and summer holidays except that you stay in and get drunk and buy a load of useless stuff for one, and go out and do the same for the other.

And you're guaranteed terrible weather for both if you stay in this country.

Summer holidays always confused me. I appreciate summer holidays if you are staying here but millions of people stay in Britain until it gets sunny and then decide to go somewhere else.

Admittedly, I do this but it would make more sense for everyone to go abroad when it's freezing here. The main reason I don't go on winter holidays is because the destinations are quiet otherwise I would.
