In response to the Scottish Independence thread, if we were to gain independence would you want a Stuart - or any other contender - on a Scottish throne?

Can someone please move this to the Holy Ground?! I have no idea how it ended up here! Sorry!

And did you know Queen Elizabeth II was conceived by artifical insemination? :cool2:

Off with their heads. Lets have a republic.

Even if Scotland did vote for independence, the Queen would remain monarch. I suppose we would, at a later date, maybe have a referendum on forming a republic.

No way - independence is the chance for us to move away from an outdated and backwards way of governing ourselves.

It would be one step forwards, two back.

I'd take a monarchy which was like the Dutch one.

What about one that was like the Canadian or Australian one? Cos I reckon that's pretty much what the default would be post independence (minus lieutenant governors or whatever they're called).

I say yes, but they would have to prove themselves a direct descendant from the ancient kings (malcolm and all that). It'd be amusing, there could be a reality TV show along the lines of 'Who Dost Thou Thinkst One Is?' as well:thumbsup:

Erm - now that you mention it....

I have in my possession my family genealogy which proves my descent all the way back to Robert the Bruce (and we have the documents to back it).

(I'm SERIOUS. We have those documents. TRUE.)

Now there's no dispute that Robert the B was descended from Malcolm Canmore, or that Malcolm was descended from Kenneth MacAlpin.

So ONE KNOWS WHO ONE IS.

ONE IS ROYAL.

So would Betty Windsor please give me my Palace at Holyrood back and clear off?

And would you lot start showing me a little bit more respect? :cool2:

BTW - I voted NO. I'm a republican.

You told us before:agree: But there may be someone who is more directly descended than you, so you would be usurped :greengrin Come on, it would be a laugh, Stuart Hall could present the programe:top marks

Trust, me, mate - if I once got the job ....

NOBODY "usurps" the Doddie.

I've done my reading.

"The new ruler must determine all the injuries that he will need to inflict. He must inflict them once and for all ...."

"A wise ruler ought never to keep faith when by doing so it would be against his interests ...."

"There is no avoiding war; it can only be postponed to the advantage of others ..... War is just when it is necessary; arms are permissible when there is no hope except in arms .... War should be the only study of a prince. He should consider peace only as a breathing-time, which gives him leisure to contrive, and furnishes as ability to execute, military plans ...."

And my favourite....

"Men should be either treated generously or destroyed, because they take revenge for slight injuries - for heavy ones they cannot .... If an injury has to be done to a man it should be so severe that his vengeance need not be feared ...."

Niccolo, my man ......

I've got relatives call Robert, Bruce, William and Wallace. I claim the crown in the event of independence.

I think Beartrix and her predecessors like Wilhelmina show a lot more solidarity with the people. Given our common Calvinist heritage, I think we would relate to a monarch more like the Dutch do than the English do. I would now like to offer myself for the post, and will not cost as much as the outdated Windsor model.

The Canadians and Aussies couldn't really give a toss about the monarchy from what I can see.

Agree about the Dutch monarchy, but I can't really see the need for a monarch after independence. Up the Republic!

However - just in case, would you like to come for a meal with me, FR? We could discuss your application for my job. :cool2:

Italian Cuisine, a couple of tasty little recipes from the mid-16th century. Invented by some chap called Borgia or de' Medici or something.

A taste of heaven, if you follow me .... :turnevil:

Jings, FR - keep hush, willya? North Lanarkshire Steak Pies are explicitly listed in Protocol Three, Section 9, Sub-Section C of the Fourth Geneva Convention as Biological Weapons of Mass Destruction and as such their use is strictly prohibited along with Sarin gas, Ebola Virus, and Anthrax.

The ONLY known antidote to a North Lanarkshire Steak Pie is to down half a gallon of Buckfast and put on specialised protective clothing.

Personaly I would want to see the Royal Family remain as figurehead to an independent Scotland and see no reason why this should not happen. The present queen can trace her roots to Robert Bruce regardless of the roundabout route she has to go to get there. I also think that at least one member of the royal family in each generation should be born in Scotland as was Princess Margaret. But none of the present generation were.
