The Curier thread got me thinking about a lot of the players who've come and gone at Hibs in recent years. The likes of Brown, Thomson, Caldwell, O'Connor, Whittaker and Fletcher are all easy enough to keep an eye on but anyone been keeping tabs on how the following are doing?

Ivan Sproule
Dean Sheils
Clayton Donaldson
Rob Jones
Alan O'Brien
Simon Brown
Zibi
Andy McNeil
Sam Morrow
The big striker whose name escapes me. Think he came from Cambridge, scored the goal v Motherwell which sealed our Uefa Cup spot but was otherwise awful!

Like every player who leaves Hibs they fall into two categories:

1. Heading for oblivion
2. Failed to make the progress that was expected

How could you forget the name of Amadou Konte?

That's an interesting observation. How many players can we name who've left Hibs and REALLY made a name for themselves? I'm not talking about the ones who simply went to Celtic or Rangers and performed adequately, I mean players who went on to succeed at a top level. Very few in recent times I'd imagine. John Collins did well for himself despite initially moving to Celtic and I'd suggest Gordon Durie did pretty well with Chelsea and Spurs, but before that are we looking at the likes of Peter Cormack (Alex Cropley (Villa) and Joe Baker (Arsenal)?

I know sproule scored a few weeks back, but other than that hes been making appearances off the bench.

Sheils scored on the opening day of the season this year.

Jones hit a bad injury a couple of weeks back, gave away a penalty and had a nightmare in his first couple of games.

O'Brien played against Wolves, but no other news on that - he was pretty poor apparently
couldn't tell you about the rest.

Rob Jones got an injury in one of his first league games. Think it was quite a bad one as well.

If Konte is still playing football then it is a travesty.

Amadou was playing in Italy for the past couple of seasons, not sure if he still is now though :agree:

Brian Rice did OK at Nottingham Forest when they were still a top level side. Going way back, Bobby Johnstone became a Man City legend, winning the FA Cup with them.

You can add Des Bremner and Neil Martin to that list.
The aren't many, are there?

Marinello was a great player for us, but didn't really set the heather on fire down south.

Gary O and Murphy likewise.

So far then, that's:

Bobby Johnstone, Man City
Joe Baker, Arsenal
Neil Martin, Sunderland
Peter Cormack, Liverpool
Alex Cropley, Villa
Des Bremner, Villa
Gordon Durie, Chelsea & Spurs
John Collins, Monaco

I think Tommy Younger went to Liverpool but before they were a great team.

Did Blackley and Brownlie not end up at Newcastle? I don't know if they did well or not.

Blackley didn't play there for long and, although Brownlie played over 100 games for Toon, he was never the player he was before he broke his leg with Hibs.

A few others to think about:

Andy Goram - pretty safe to say that he fulfilled his potential (despite it being for Ranger) - IMO Scotland's greatest ever goalie.

On an SPL level

Paul Wright - poor for us, but never stopped scoring against us after that.
Craig Dargo - as above, but not quite as good.

Konte is still playing for Spezia in Italy. I posted a video of his spectacular 'falling over backwards bicycle kick goal' last season. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IW-1Idy4oDA
Looks like he's enjoying life:cool2:

What happened to Clayton Snoop Donaldson?

Doumbe and Dobbie are another two from that victory celebration picture in the 04 semi versus derHun. Dobbie as we know has moved to Swansea, Doumbe signed for MK Dons last month.

The way I remember it with Paul Wright was that he looked good for us initially but got badly injured as a result of a shocking challenge by Neil Berry and never really got going for us again. Could be wrong though.

I don't think Dargo ever played a first team game for Hibs did he?

I know some have been mentioned but I'll talk about the above names

Sproule has been on the bench for most of Bristol Citys games but has started a few!

Shiels is exactly the same as Sproule but is playing for Doncaster.

Clayton Donaldson is the same but playing at a lower level for Crewe, just broke his fibula so is expected to be out for 2 months. I actually saw him play in february when I saw Southend play Crewe, He started the match for them but came off mid way through the second half with an injury.

Jones at Scunthorpe was playing until he suffered concussion after colliding with a goalpost, will probably be back for their next game though.

O'Brien is at Swindon Town and has so far made mostly only sub appearences.

Simon Brown is currently a free agent after his Brentford contract expired.

Zibi Malkowski is currently playing for some diddy polish team!

Andy McNeil is still clubless!

Sam Morrow is still playing for Derry City but has just recently broken his leg.

And Konte is in Italy, you already know that! :greengrin

Correct on both points, Berry should have been sent off in that game but of course this was Alex McDonald as manager we are talking about here, he was a proven goalscorer and they knew it.

A shame Dargo never got a chance though

Paul Wright got a Scottish Cup Winners medal at Killie  and had a strike rate of better than one in three in the league I think

When Kevin Harper left us did he not go right into the premiership with Derby and score at Anfield? Please correct if this is not true..i vaguely remember it!

Shelton Martis also went and played some Premiership football.

That's a great shout. I'd forgotten all about that:

"Derby's only Premier League victory at Anfield was 1-2 on 7 November 1998, when Kevin Harper and Paulo Wanchope were on target."

I think Kev also had a decent career at Portsmouth.

Only players who have been a relative success in recent years are the players who were produced by Hibs from within the youth ranks. The rest apart from maybe Murphy who has had bad luck with injury are showing themselves up to be very limited players that were exulted more so by some than the afore mentioned youth products that went on to command larger fee's and no doubt higher wages.
