....... proud/content/not bothered about being British??

Following the adoption of a seemingly literate pet Hun on this site, I was just wondering (and this thread has got hee-haw to do with Rangers/Celtc or scottish football at all)

Please let's not have this descend into flags/ OFGTF etc etc. I'm just wondering if people think that being a Proud Scotsman/woman and being a proud/content Briton are mutually exclusive??

A simple yes or No, with a wee explanation, but let's try to maintain respect for others opinions, as long as they are reasonably expressed.

For me, I'm Scottish first, British second (and fine with that) then a European (I guess). I just don't understand this dichotomy that seems to prevail sometimes that you can't be a proud Scotsman and content to be British, without this inferring that you are some backward, craggy middle Englander that waves the Union Jack and listens to the Last Night of the Proms on repeat.

So for me, it's a "Yes".

I do not see the problem with being Scottish and British. That said I do not see myself a European. Maybe when we become the USE :greengrin.

That said I still support any team that plays England at any sport. :greengrin

Of course.

That applies to the vast majority of Scots.

Thats what I've always thought/hoped :agree:

Encouraging if true, though sometime I have my doubts about it.

I voted 'yes' but then I'm not especially proud to be Scottish, British or European but then I'm not ashamed or bothered either.

I've never really 'got' rampant patriotism - where you are born is a complete quirk of fate.

My Mum is Scottish, my Dad is English and I was born there although lived but all 2 years up here.

I am definately Scottish and British and proud of it.

I am also proud to be English, but to be honest that's not very often, certainly as far as the footy is concerned.

I've been a mixed up kid for a long long time.

You sound perfectly well balanced. :agree:

I find that living outside of Scotland increases patriotism :agree:

I'm going to be the first to say no, but I guess my case is exceptional.

I'm proud to be both Scottish and American, but don't feel any tie to the "UK". My second passport is a UK passport, but I don't feel the British association at all.

I am a proud Scot and also a proud to be British, although being Scottish for me is far more important. Our history for the past 300 years makes us British citizens, fighting in wars with one another, working together socialising. As Scots we have a wealth of history and heritage in our own right and it's this that we find hard to ignore, making us extremely proud of where we come from.

I know there are a lot of Scots who want independence and seperation, whether that's a good thing I don't know as it may be too late to do this because of the last 300 years as a union of coutries. It's this last 300 years of our history that makes me proud to be British, I'll never class myself as European as that's going to far with very little connection between ourselves and the mainland Europeans, christ we slag them off at every chance we get cause that's our type of humour.

I don't mind being referred to as British but if I was asked to state my nationality, I would always say "Scottish".

I would never describe myself as European.

I voted yes.

I am scottish and will always put Scottish when asked for a nationality. I've never considered myself to be British and have never really understood why some people do.

For example, a Italian would never classify themself as "european." so in that sence I don't really get why some people seem to think that you can be British by nationality - in my opnion it's a name of an island (and surrounding islands that want to be called Britain) that is made up of various different countries.

So aye, I'd probably correct someone if they said "oh, are you british?" (not that it happens very much :faf:) but it wouldn't bother me.
