Did anybody see the programme 'How do you know God exists?' on channel 4 on sunday night?

I found it really interesting. They had a muslim professor, archbishop of canterbury, leader of the catholic church in Britain, Chief Rabbi and a hindu priest on the show.

What I found most remarkable was that all these people from different faiths were so similar. They all came across as really intelligent, caring people who all just longed for a peaceful world and some hope to live for.

All were equally assured of their faith in their God, but they all had much more in common than I expected. If you haven't watched it yet I'd recommend a wee visit to 4 on demand.

Sounds quite interesting. Never seen it though.

They may also have one other BIG thing in common :greengrin

At very best, one of them is right.

Please, please, please, please, please, please, pretty please someone either prove or disprove this. Either way there will be billions of people who look rather silly.

If it was proved there was a god but it was unknown who his affiliates were do you think that would cause more or less religious war than there is now?

What would happen if god was discovered and he was identified as being affiliated with one religion. Would all the other religious nuts then try to kill whoever discovered god and say they were lying and that he was really their god or would they all convert?

The more I think about it, we'd still be in the same situation, even if it could be proved / disproved we'd still have billions of people telling each other they are wrong. :faf:

If you believe god exists - He does.

Simples.

I believe there's fluffy pink elephants that live in disused coal mines. Does that make it true?

I was hoping someone would add to my points above about what they think would happen in the world if it was proved/disproved. Pure speculation I know but interesting all the same.

I don't think it can either be proved or disproved because it is about the beliefs
of individual people. I also think that if people werent' fighting for their god, they would be led to fight over some other belief - eg vegetarians v. meat eaters.

Well according to the legend that is the Bible (NT), Jesus - the son of God - was actually here on earth - we killed him!
Now, I personally wouldn't go so far if God did turn up one day, I would however petition for His banishment to parts unknown for His shirking responsibility and a job badly done!

Would anyone else (i.e. those of the 'wrong' religion) want to kill God ? You kidding - they'd be lining up in their millions!

Don't be silly. God would never affiliate himself to any of the religions around today.

Doddie will no doubt come along in a minute and give you chapter and verse (excuse the pun) to disprove that...

I suppose we all have different languages, different ways of clothing ourselves, different architecture, different food, different music, different art, etc., etc. Nevertheless, we all speak, dress ourselves, live in some form of shelter, eat, make music, make art. Even if we relate to God in different ways, we're still all doing the same thing.

God would argue (if the Granton Star Cause is anything to go by) that all he did was create the world and everything in it, it's up to humans what they do, and he is getting heartily p*ssed off getting the blame for it.

I dont understand what point youre trying to make.

We have different languages (according to Genesis, anyway) because God got p!ssed off at people co-operating and building the tower of babel. A bit petty, in my opinion but there you go.

We dress to keep warm

We have shelter because we dont like extremes of weather

We make music and art because we have evolved to be able to do so.

So if we relate to god in different ways, its because different local tribal leaders have managed to impose there own control mechanism onto their followers, and some have been more succesful than others.

So what was your point, caller?

No, Doddie would come along and give some couthy Sunday Post-esque monologue about some sad/inspiring/courageous experience he has come across and believe he has made a profound comment.

But only after answering a completely different point.
