Watched a programme about this era on BBC4 at the weekend - to mark 20th(?) Anniversary of Stone Roses Debut album.

Good advert against taking drugs but I digress.

I got into New Order in 1987 and my Fave band until James appeared so I never really got into Joy Division but did read Pleasures and wayward distractions - a biography of both Joy Division and New Order.

Madchester - there was some dross but some quality tunes going on. Perhaps through nostalgic-tinted glasses as this was "my era" but there seems to be a dearth of talent these days to match back then. Manufactured garbage!

Here's the thing - it never mentioned about Ian Curtis' affair as I recall. Therefore I presume this only ever came out much later (out of respect for his daughter?) Also looking through some of the lyrics does seem he wrote a long suicide note through his songs - aged 23 - tragic really. Made me curious to learn more about him. Will likely get the films out now...

I agree James were a great band, although werent really included in the whole scene, they did some great albums right through the 90s.
I was in the Hacienda travel club in the early 90s...if you remember it you werent really there :greengrin

My flat mate at Uni gave me control as a birthday gift a year or so ago, finally watched it last week. its cracking and although I've never been a massive JD fan, it was interesting viewing. Well worth watching.

Cheers peeps. Should have qualified - The bigography Pleasures and Wayward Distractions never mentioned the affair - the programme did.

I'm not denying Wilson was a genius. Certainly not a commercial one and did appear to leave a bit of a trail in his wake...

As for the Stone Roses - the George Best of the music world? - what a waste of talent...

Hacienda - went down to see the Inspiral Carpets at the G-Mex but the week before there had been some grief (IIRC some girl OD'd or someone brought a gun in) so it was closed for a while. Probably my biggest regret.

Still met Clint Boon at the after show party. Seemed pretty together.

I love the Madchester stuff - had a night out in the Hacienda a good few years back and it was brilliant.:thumbsup:

I missed Joy Division first time round too, but have since gone back and got into them. James were about my favourite band for years.:agree:

Would love to get some Factory Records art - anyone know where you can get FAC51 Haciendia poster or picture.

I vaguely remember all the Madchester stuff when I was in 2nd or 3rd year at school and some kids going around in ther flares and moo t-shirts (does that make sense?) Kind of passed me by though, I only really got into music with the whole Britpop thing.
