I received this dodgy email and was wondering who i can report it to. I am not daft and would never fall for something liek this but all it takes is for it to go to someone who doesnt know any better and bang they have no money left. Here is the email
I am Alan Chan,an attorney at law in Malaysia. A deceased client of mine, who shares the same last name as yours, died as the result of a heart-related condition on March 12th 2005. His heart condition was due to the death of all then known members of his family in the tsunami disaster on the 26th December 2004 in Sumatra Indonesia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_Indian_Ocean_earthquake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_Indian_Ocean_earthquake).

I can be reached on ([email protected]) for more information. My late Client has a deposit of Seventeen Million Five Hundred Thousand Dollars (US$17.5 Million Dollars) left behind.

Best regards,

Alan Chan Chee Ming

No one. There are thousands of these emails flying about all the time. My works generic mailbox gets at least 1 or 2 similar messages every day.

This is called a Nigerian scam or sometimes called (I think) a 422 scam after the phone-code area in Nigeria where they first started off.

There's no-one you can report it to. Variations on the theme include job offers, deceased African leaders/princes/oil executives, Hungarian academics, and god know how many others.

If you want a good laugh at the scammers by someone who got their own back at them a book by a guy called Mike Berry "Greetings, in Jesus name!" is very good. Also in the book Yes Man by Danny Wallace (several million times better than the appalling Jim Carrey film) there is an very good section where he tracks the scammers.

419 or advanced fee fraud is from the Federal Government of Nigeria criminal code "Obtaining property by false pretences". Lots of good website with scambusters etc. Good reads.

Just ignore it, or do what I do: play along for a bit and mess with them. It's very satisfying.
