I thought about adding this to the Afghanistan thread, but then thought it deserved a thread in its own right. Every British military death in Afghanistan represents a personal tragedy, and I think it is extraordinarily poignant how the residents of Wootton Bassett stop what they are doing to pay tribute to the hearses carrying the British dead on their way home from RAF Lyneham. the town has become an "everyman" for us all. This is going to be another emotional week for them, and I for one would like to acknowledge those residents as acting on behalf of the vast majority of Britons.

Watching TV tonight, seeing all the hearses going through the main street, very sad viewing and so young.

All credit to them. Theres no bigger critic of the war than myself but every life cut short deserves to be recognised and i'm glad the people of this town take the time to recognise the sacrifice.

As an ex-serviceman I found the whole thing very dignified and not a little moving - on this occasion as on all previous occasions. The people of Wooton Basset deserve total respect for what they do.
