How absolutely rediculous and over the top is this whole thing shaping up to be?!
Michael Jackson's coffin will be placed in the centre of the stage, with a concert going on around him - over 7 channels are covering the event, LA Police closed highways off at rush hour to allow the funeral cortege through...
Without wishing to start another character assassination/outpouring thread, this is on a key with Princess Di with the sheer hype - completely OTT in my opinion! :bitchy:

Should be a good show. Hopefully they give him a good send off :agree:

I've just finished reading a book by Francis Wheen in which he describes the reaction to Princess Diana's death as,
"The anguished pleas of a lonely and atomised populace, desperate for company. The emotion was spontaneous and genuine, misdirected maybe; and, in that sense, irrational. But it was not insincere or superficial. Sentimental passion and empathy offered a more inclusive vocabulary of social cohesion than politics could provide. During the 1980s politics was dominated by somebody who insisted that 'there is no such thing as society, only individual men and woman and their families'; by 1997 Britain was governed by a Labour Prime Minister who regarded comradeship and collective association as anachronisms that should be excluded from the political lexicon. Was it any wonder that so many people clung to the memory of 'the Diana effect'? If a large throng of demonstrators had stopped the traffic to express their solidarity with a victimised trade unionist whom they had never met, Blair would have been quick to condemn it as 'unlawful secondary action'. To take to the streets on behalf of a 'victimised' princess, however, was quite permissible, not least as a distraction from the vacuous inadequacy of contemporary politics: far better to have a mass emote than a mass debate."
And I think that's true about every similar event we've seen since - Goody, Jackson and whoever is next in line for the treatment.
N.B. No laughing at his final sentence!

The guy was a musical legend but I still believe a lot of the allegations against him were swept under the carpet with a nice payoffs. That said his music was/is still genius.

Powerful stuff!
Her "reminder", that he died an innocent man in the eyes of the law was delivered without reservation. No doubt she'll receive a fair bit of backlash for that! Definitely a brave move :agree:

No. Where have all those people suddenly appeared from? It will only be a few days before all the low life make an appearance and this "event" will seem a distant memory.

I didn't watch all of it, but it seemed pretty horrid and the very definition of car-crash TV!
I find it pretty distasteful that there's been nothing other than this on the main news channels all day, with only very brief sections in reference to the events of 4 years ago.
I have utterly no argument that this event was a huge global event which media outlets were going to cover but it's certainly not the only newsworthy story to come out today!

And it's no from me too. An absolute celebration of the tacky, the artificial, the shallow and the superficial. As his life would have been had it not been for the dark side, which everyone is in denial about.
A celebrity blub-fest, with various other no-marks trying to outdo each other in the grief to order stakes.
Big contrast to the silent dignity of the people of Wooton Bassett as the latest two coffins from Afghanistan came past them. Both their occupants worth ten Michael Jacksons.

Exactly, apart from singing some songs what has this guy actually done to help the world. You would think he is some kind of saint the way some people go on. I'm all for celebrating someones life if you knew him/her but this is beyond a joke

But, looks like there are two sides to every MJ story.
From Richard Bath Scotland on Sunday, 28 June
Nor was he [Jackson] below base hucksterism. He might have been included in the Guinness Book of Records as the pop star with the greatest number of charity involvements at 39, but tax records in the US and UK showed his Heal the World Foundation and charity Earth Care failed to make any charitable donations. A court case in 2000 also revealed that he not only charged two charity concerts he put on in 1999 in Seoul and Munich for the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Unesco, the Red Cross, and his own Heal the World Foundation a $1 million co-executive-producer fee, but also took the sponsorship money, TV and video rights. Only $100,000 went to good causes.

So he has donated money to some charities. All be it a lot of money but compare it to someone who earns say £20,000 and its probably the same. He has met with people who have disabilities etc. So have i on numerous occasions but it doesnt make me any better a person than you or anyone else.

I thought it was entirely in keeping with the way he lived his life, myself.
Entirely appropriate, in fact.
