Did anyone else see that program on BBC2 last night?
It was about a DVD that's going the rounds alleging all sorts of conspiracies surrounding the London bombings.
The DVD purports to have been made by an Islamist called Muad Dib (IIRC) but in fact was made by an Englishman named John Hill living in the Republic of Ireland (who believes he's the Messiah) and is being circulated and supported by all sorts of nutters including a DJ in Bristol and an alleged "investigator" who turns out to be a far-right Holocaust denier and anti-Semite.
What was really unsettling was that another of the people propagating this trash was one of the leaders of a large mosque in the Englsih Midlands. They're showing the DVD in the mosque this Sunday, apparently - despite the Beeb having shown them the evidence and information they gathered for the program.

People find conspiracy theories for anything and can't accept the truth.

I think in many cases it actually becomes pathological.
I don't think it's coincidence that everyone I've ever met who believes in such things shows a quite astonishing lack of understanding of how the world actually works, coupled with a pretty poor understanding of Occam's Razor...
Francis Wheen puts it pretty well, "Sherlock Holmes used to remind Dr. Watson that when you have eliminated the impossible 'whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be true'. But the whole point of conspiracy theories is that nothing is impossible. What remains is everything, and so everything must be true."

One thing I found interesting is that they had their calls recorded, I missed the first bit of the program so didn't know if there was an explanation for that. Were they just picking up signals going into the buildings and recording them?
Conspiracy theory anyone
On a serious note, I found watching last nights program really sad and such a waste of life (including the people who were obviously brainwashed into it (but not as much as the victims) and in the end got what they deserved).
I watched it with the GF and we were silent pretty much the whole way through which doesn't normally happen when we watch TV together. She's not that into serious matters that go on in the world and is generally quite ignorant to it (she didn't even know this was recent) but even she was taken in by it all.
P.S she's not dense but doesn't watch TV very much or read papers.
