Hardline Islamists have condemned four young Somali men to a double amputation for stealing mobile phones and guns. They will each have a hand and a leg cut off after being convicted by a Sharia court in the capital, Mogadishu.

I thought this was going to be another Daily Mail Story; 'Immigrants get free amputations under NHS' 'is this what my taxes pay for'?:grr:

The Daily Mail might struggle to know whether to condemn this appalling brutality or applaud this more rigorous approach to justice.

Lets take the piss out of the DM and ignore the fact that a court which rules based on religion has just decided that these people should lose an arm and a leg for stealing a phone and a gun. Crazy!

Where are all the people who slap down capital punishment when it is discussed for fear of courts getting it wrong? These guys are going to have their limbs amputated in public, I'm guessing there's not gonna be any hygene standards. These guy may die after it.

I am here, for one. Amnesty say it all for me in that article.

As for your guess about hygiene standards, let's assume it is merely a guess. The article did say that the sentence couldn't be carried out right away, for fear of the men bleeding to death in the heat.

Barbaric as it is, and this isn't meant to sound like I'm condoning it, but Islamic law has used that punishment for centuries.

Good to see someone commenting because a lot of people are too quick to jump on the bandwagon re the papers etc rather than looking at the issue at hand.

It was merely a guess, assuming that it's done in public I can't imagine it's the best way but did read the bit about the heat (thinner blood when it's hot I think(?)).

It is barbaric and there's no place for this type of thing in a civilised society. I have said before that I agree with CP in some instances but this type of thing is crazy.

Totally agree, however it's their country and that's the way they do things. We do "barbaric" things in this country that Somalis would no doubt be shocked about too.

Whilst in Benin when serving in the RN we were out on the beers when a guy on a push bike cycled past and stole one of the guys cameras, we went to the nearest phone[pre moblle days] which happened to be in a bar and got the bar tender to phone the polis, who duly turned up took details about the thief, they said they had an idea who he was and within 20 mins or so they returned with the guy and the camera, then asked the owner if he wanted the guy shot or beaten to within an inch of his life, the camera owner said neither ta I just wanted my camera back, so the polis man told him if he did not decide he would just shoot him where he stood, so the camera owner after much arguing back and forward said not to shoot him just beat him, the polis man took off his belt with an IRON buckle as big as I have ewer seen and set about knocking ten bells out of this poor guy, when we all tried to stop it happening he pulled his gun on us and threatened us with it shouting that this was justice in his country.

Sorry for the kind of thread hijack but unfortunately that's the way things happen in other Countries.

Another wee story along the same lines [on the same trip funnily enough] we were in Lagos [Nigeria] when we walked past a market stall not far from the city center, we smelt what we thought was a B-B-Q cooking meat, so we went round the corner to find a smoldering heap, we thought it was a strange site so somebody tried to take a photo of it until the polis stepped in and told him in no uncertain terms to put away the camera, we asked why and were informed that the smoldering heap was a thief who had stolen a white womans purse [there words not mine] so the stall holders [fearing they would lose the tourist trade ] had given the guy a tyre necklace and set fire to him. :jamboak:

i seen somethign similar in Malawi 4 years ago, two thieves robbed someone of there mobile phone and there money, they got caught an hour later after coming back into town, everything on this street stopped and people crowded round them and basically just took shots at them, kicking and punching, whipped by belts, this went on for a good two hours.

i have heard of people get fingers chopped off but never the feet?
But when people are hungry and have mouths to feed they will steal for money its that simple.
This is just another awful story of what is currently happening over there.
Are government really needs to step up its support towards somalia.

Compared with shooting or burning alive, it seems that cutting off a hand is relatively restrained.

Is that not a choice of the mothers as opposed to a punishment for a crime committed

Having an abortion is NOT barbaric. Far more people should have them. I see far too many young idiots with children these days.

Two things that should never go together: shellsuits and prams

poor example...next!

Fair enough.

Our state does permit and even provides for abortion on a wide scale. Collectively, if not uniformly, we in this country accept and in most cases endorse the system, at least in principle. Somalia being an Islamic state governed on the principles of Islamic law and practices would not. It is fair to assume that Somalis would be 'shocked' by our attitudes to abortion and even regard our practices as barbaric -- although if anyone knows better I would be happy to have my assumption corrected.

I thought it was so obvious that amputating someones limb for a minor offence was a bad thing I didnt need to mention it:rolleyes: Just so we're clear, yes it is a bad thing in my opinion.

There isn't much authority in Somalia. Seems to be local warlords/clerics that share the power

So it probably wont be local Somali ships and people who suffer? The pirates will be viewed by some as Robin Hood like characters.

Quite right....if they choose to attack and steal from people...they must suffer the consequences...

Plus whats all the fuss about? At least the pirates will get some money once they sell their slippers...no use to them :cool2:

So that's religion, is it? :bitchy:

Horrific.

Imagine what Edinburgh would be like if we imposed laws like that.

Skip your bus fares = A finger.

Eat a grape in Tesco = A toe.

Use the work mobile to call your mate - An ear.

Eat a couple of chocolate Brazil nuts at the pick and mix while loading up for the cinema = The end bit of your tongue.

Corporal punishment. That'll teach 'em.

The "authorities" likely know who a lot of them are, likely share in a good few "bounties" while they look the other way as well. Thats how the system goes, "whats in it for me?" a well used phrase on that continent.
