:agree:

It's poor, poor stuff from a putative national leader. The quote itself is reminiscent of "'Allo, 'Allo".

Does he have Gordon Kaye in mind as Foreign Secretary?

The more he is exposed to scrutiny as a supposed PM-in-waiting, the more his vacuous opportunism and shallow chicanery will be brought to light.

He makes Blair look like a man of substance

He was comparing a police officer who might probe you about why you are not carrying your ID card, with a member of the SS in Nazi Germany.

It's not offensive in the slightest.

I'm not a big Cameron fan but the way the present incumbents are running the country offends me far far more.

ID cards, just about the most ridiculous idea going and total waste of money. Typical Labour imo.

I was sorely tempted to amend the thread title

'David Cameron causes offence' was all it needed to say

Appointing 'celebrities' to government for publicity, having close advisers orchestrate fictional smear campaigns, trying to leech some of Obama's popularity or lying to the country about countless things - that sort of thing?

Nein, we are not offended being. It is OK as we can take joke like all Britisher pals, don't you know, for you Tommy the war is over. Damm I mention war, but only joking is. We are all big friends now, and eating chips and fish on the Piccadilly line, wis Dundee Cake, innit? Good old Cammo he is the face of Blighty in Europe, and we are proud him to know.

he may have been better served, and indeed have got some more respect, by trying to imitate Schultz from that 70's American POW sitcom... "I know nuzzeenk".

Suffering Sieg Heils!

Let me get this straight! When ID cards are introduced our good old British Bobbies, bastions of freedom and upholders of the British way of life are immediately going to turn into sinister, jack-booted, nasty Nazis harassing our citizens and turning us into a police state?

Is the official Conservative Party line? Seems a bit off. I would have thought the party of law and order would give our boys in blue a bit more credit than that. There are our hard working police forces trying to shake off a "totally unwarranted and slanderous reputation for institutional fascism perpetrated by Pinko BBC, Guardian-reading Bollinger brigade socialists” (Telegraph – passim) when the Prime Minister in waiting comes out with this!

Has the Daily Mail been told?

Incidentally, you don't just have to be a member of police force to be offended. You could also be German.

the cops are already dodgy, no need to give them more powers. although you're right - the image does clash with the rosy picture the tories usually paint of the polis.

Is this a comparison to Brown?

Appointing 'celebrities' to government for publicity, Do you have some hitherto undisclosed insight into the work that was/is to be done by your 'celebrities' that indicates why they wouldn't potentially be the best person for the role they were given?

having close advisers orchestrate fictional smear campaigns,?
Did he? So you're saying that McBride did what he did on Brown's instruction? That's a bit of a scoop because none of the traditional media were quite asserting that...

trying to leech some of Obama's popularity?

Did he? How did he go about that then?

or lying to the country about countless things - that sort of thing?

Countless things? Countless?

Name fifty then. Or twenty.......

If you've got something to suggest that Fiona Phillips or Alan Sugar are the best qualified in the UK to do anything, feel free to share it.

No established media outlets have directly accused him but several have expressed incredulity that he wouldn't, at least, be aware of the planning of the campaign.

It's been reported in the media, that No 10 tried to orchestrate as many opportunities to be photographed and/or alone with Obama to try and obtain a 'bounce' by association.

I watched him lying about public spending this afternoon. There's one. I've also watched him deny ever considering getting rid of Alistair Darling, despite his own advisers briefing otherwise. There's two. In the last week or so.

Unfortunately, I have to rely on the political media (and resigning cabinet ministers) for my information. Feel free to let me know any inside info that you have.

So really you don't have anything incontrovertible then?

The lying's probably the big one. "Countless" lies. Why don't you name some, spell them out and prove why they are lies. If they're "countless" you could probably fill pages of this thread with them....

I've got a life. I've demonstrated two barefaced lies in the past week - both of which have been repeated more than once. Feel free to extrapolate that up for 104 weeks or thereabouts.

'Countless' probably was the wrong word to use though. With enough time and motivation, most folk could probably count into the billions and beyond. Let's just call it 'shedloads'.

David Cameron was saying that the ID cards would be a complete waste of time unless it was made compulsory for people to carry them about at all times. In which case, if you were out walking your dog, a police officer could legally ask you to produce your ID card or you would be arrested.

If they were to do such a thing, it would presumably be, in his opinion, similar to how the Nazis used to go about their business.

Which is why he impersonated a German accent.

They must have been rolling in the aisles. Who else does he do in his routine? A bit of Jimmy Cagney? Max Wall? Jimmy Durante? Throw in a few Irish and Paki jokes and Jim Davidson will be looking for another job.
