Probably be allowed in but possibly detained for up to ten years when you try to leave.

I know it is usually 6 months but phone the passport office who can advise.

One of my mates was allowed to travel to Spain on an out of date passport due to a technicality that was confirmed by the passport office / consulate or whatever it is. IIRC you are allowed to travel in the EU without the need for a valid passport. However, when in Spain there is a law that states everyone should carry ID so he was allowed to travel with the out of date one.

When he got to the airport checking they wouldn't let him fly as they said he was wrong. He had to get them to call the passport office / consulate so you should be okay.

I would advise phoning them.

The UK is not a full party to the "Schengen Agreement" unfortunately, so I assume there could be problems there. Although - once on the mainand, he should be OK"

Okay. It's strange that my mate managed to get through with it. Maybe the office didn't quite understand the rules!

Might want to give that one a miss mate. :greengrin

Edit; you should probably just get a new passport.

I travelled to Amsterdam with only 8 days left on my passport when I returned with out any problems, so you should be okay.

When I called the passport office I was told that when entering a European union country your passport was valid as long as your exit date was prior to your passports expiration date.

Or you could renew your passport before you go? Think you can renew it with up to 9 months remaining....

Looks like it is true as long as your are not staying more then the 6months left!!

Is the passport validity the same for all members of the EU?

No - you should check each country you intend to travel to. For example you need 6 months left on your passport to enter Belgium but your passport only needs to be valid for the duration of your stay for places like Spain, Greece and France.

Im going to Alicante, Spain in August and my passport expired last month, i enquired at the Post Office about what could be done and they said the only option was a new passport...

It cost £7 but getting the new form checked at the post office before it got sent off mean that it was renewed, and returned, with a new picture in 8 days...

You mean an extra £7 on top of the £72 to get it processed quickly.

I'm fortunate enough to hold dual-citizenship, and my passports are nicely staggered, so I don't need to replace one as frequently, as I just switch to the other one

I don't think an EU passport is necessary for travel to other European Union countries, so long as you have valid photo ID, though I could be wrong.

I'm surprised that this is still the case in a post-9/11 world mind you...

I think this is correct, but in the UK we don't have a valid form of ID that isn't a passport, drivers licence doesn't count
