Anyone else see this last night on Channel 4?

Irish business woman comes to Dundee to dish out money to needy charities etc.

Showed Dundee up in a fantastic light - as per usual.

By fantastic do you mean realistic?

You wouldn't need to send a millionaire to Dundee to make a difference. The secret "bloke with a thousand quid" would do.

Cant stand that programme, bunch of guilty and concered, middle class, worthy, disaster junky types getting their jollies handing out relative paltry amounts to the 'deserving' (the ones the millionaire decide are deserving) poor.
Its about easing there own conscience and making themselves feel good.
They did it all for charidee!

Absolutely, it's a singularly distasteful exercise in Victoriana. Bleeding heart libertarianism, you might say...

That's one way of looking at it, and one I pretty much agree with. Usual generic quotes include:

"oh, I feel like I've lost touch with my humble roots"
"These people have absolutely nothing, yet they still invited me round for tea"
" I feel like I've actually given something back now"

A subtle exercise in massaging the egos of people with far too much money - feasting off the day-to-day difficulties of people that they wouldn't touch with a bargepole if there wasn't a tv camera following them around does not make for good tv, and does not make them "better" people.

No, I meant what I said. The area in question that the "secret" millionaire was living in is by no means the most deprived area in Dundee, I can assure you of that, but probably gave the best camera views. Probably because the most deprived areas are currently being regenerated. And that just wouldn't do.

These two are said on nearly every episode, on a recent episode this really old dieing man turned round to the secret millionaire guy and said something like charity should never be about you, you should never give your name and take credit for it.

Exactly. I'm not from Dundee (thank christ :greengrin), but i found the programme winding me up a bit. Dundee has a really crappy reputation, not totally undeserved but certainly not as just as it should be. These kind of programmes do nothing to help develop the image of the city.

Since I moved up here almost 4 year ago, the city (even the bits most don't see) has undergone massive regeneration.

Exactly - when the Waterfront redevelopment is completed, this City will be one of the nicest in Scotland, particularly if the rest of the city continues being developed as well.

Just out of curiosity Arab, which part of Dundee was it filmed in?

It was Hilltown, I think it was Alexander Street?

When you drive around areas like Hilltown or Whitfield etc it's no different from areas of Edinburgh tbh. Scotland has a poverty problem even in this day and age, and it's not confined to Dundee, however much certain individuals like to convince themselves of this.

Agree in part but some of them genuinely get their eyes opened. Im all for people trying to help good causes it might take 100 to get a few genuine cases but better that than sticking all their wealth into high interest accounts and never helping anyone. Charity starts from bottom up and we all would be better supporting something

I don't really believe in charity and philanthropy full stop, but that's going off thread a bit.

There was a young man from Dundee...
He signed on the Social Security...
He signed on and he signed on and he signed and he signed on and he signed on and it's going to stay that way..

True G, I only mentioned Edinburgh directly because it has a relevance to most on this board.
