Don't know if you've been following the news lately, but a nurse has been struck off for blowing the whistle on abusive practices at her work. Although the hospital concerned has been widely condemned, following a Panarama expose, the nurse has been found to be in breach of practice because she went to the media.

She went to the media because no-one in the hospital trust would listen to her complaints. Nurses have a duty to stand up to wrong practice, and the irony is that she could have been struck off if she'd said nothing.

This is a disgusting, vindictive action by the NMC - who incidentally were happy to reinstate a nurse who was guilty of beating his wife, and allow him to go back to work. Please sign the petition below so that this woman can get justice.

Been following the story with interest FR. Will definitely sign the petition. Knew of a a few things that happened in my days that didn't go nearly as far as this but rocking the boat was definitely not accepted and it was only the toughest that kept going.

Reporting wrong doing is very difficult in the NHS. :agree:

I heard about a charge nurse who took home a patient's TV set and gave it to her daughter, who gave someone close to her the contract to paint her ward - without any tendering process; she also allowed one of her Nursing Assistants to cut patients hair and charge for it - whilst she was being paid by the NHS at the same time, there would have been gross irregularities in her ward accounts (if she had kept any in the first place). Worst of all she was claiming weekend overtime when she wasn't there, and asking other members of staff to lie for her.

Another nurse on the ward realised this was wrong, and also realised that she would go down with the rest if the irregualrity was brought to people's attention. Who do you think NHS Lothian sided with? It's a no-brainer really, either sack the charge nurse and all those in charge of her, or make life difficult for the staff nurse who blew the whistle.

Needless to say the charge nurse was admonished, and funnily enough retired soon after. The whistle blower now has to work in NHS Lothian, with a mark of suspicion hanging over her head.

Duly signed.

My mother worked for the NHS for 30+ years and some of the stories that she told me made me feel sick, well done to Margaret for bringing this to light.
