View Full Version : The Susan Boyle phenomenon
Apologies if I've missed any other threads on her...but WTF is going on??
I've been plonked in my taxi for the past two weeks without TV and all I've heard on the radio is stuff about Susan Boyle.
Local radio stations have been going on about her.
NATIONAL radio stations have been doing the same...and their correspondants from all over the world say that she is news in America, brazil, Spain and all over Europe!!
I've just watched her on youtube and the audition was amazing...a real surprize but is she that good??
Is this celebrity culture going mad???
Good on her if it is and I hope she gets to the top.
Has she done anything other than this audition for this talent contest or is the whole thing based on this?

I think thats one of the points though, that she hasnt done anything else and is a good singer. Plus she isnt very braw and says she is a virgin. Being a bathgate bairn myself I cant see how its possible to grow up in and around west lothian and be a virgin at almost 50:shocked:

She's no better (or worse) than any other amateur singer you'll find doing local karaoke circuits and small time shows in pubs and clubs. Certainly not the best amateur rendition of that Les Miserables song I've heard either, for that matter.
She was in my mum's year at school, and was apparantly one of the special needs kids, with learning difficulties. She's gone her entire life dealing with that having known no success, no intimate relationship or attention, so good on her for finally standing up and being appreciated by so many. I just hope she'll be taken under the wing of a responsible agent who won't let the vile industry take advantage of her.

Tell me how many amateur singer's have had over 100 Millions hits on Youtube, Susan does have special needs and has learning difficulties at did attend west Lothian College. I wish her all the best and can't wait till the media move out of Blackburn because they have laid seige out side her front door. But i'm not sure why you mentioned she had special needs and has learning difficulties for because what has that got to do with her singing.

I can see why it would appear unrelated, but I don't mean it to sound demeaning or detrimental to her.
My reason for mentioning it, was covered by the final sentence of the paragraph you've quoted. If people know of her background, common misconceptions of educational difficulties may take over and folk will probably try taking advantage of her. I hope an agent will take her under her wing and look after her. Its actually refreshing to see the industry not being limited to a stereotype and that she will have a career (most probably) as a very ordinary person with a decent talent.
As for her success over other amateur singers, I don't know what seems to seperate her from the average amateur singer - she's certainly not any more talented. My personal opinion won't be popular, but I reckon her unorthodexed appearance and shock factor is probably a significant factor.

Susan Boyle is going to be like a jar of marmite. Weel kent but not loved or even appreciated by everyone.
IMO she has a talent that I can only envy :agree: She been given an opportunity to make a living out of that talent :agree: Most of us can only dream of that happening to us; whether it's singing, creating something beautiful out of a bit of paper and a pencil or dare I say it, playing at the top level in football.
I can never understand why so many people are ready to criticise those of us who are prepared to support the Susan Boyle's of this world, as if we're some sort of mentally challenged and uneducated breed with no real appreciation of the "finer" things in life :bitchy:

I've no problem with her making a few bob but I think we all know it's down to her being mentally challenged (not us) frumpy and a decent singer (of one song?)
That's why the programme makers aren't happy (apparently) that she's started wearing more fashionable clothes and had her hair cut. It's the image that matters not how good or bad a singer someone is.

I have heard Susan many times in the clubs and pubs in the Blackburn/Bathgate area and the one thing that hits you right away the minute you hear her live is she has a perfect voice wither its on Britain's got talent or Blackburn's Bowling club or the Happy valley pub every weekend she has got a great voice when singing live. There are not many top name singers around that perform well when singing live. Most people with special needs don't take rejection well so it will be interesting to see if/when she is voted out how will she react.
The media will push the poor woman to be a recluse. I think she has a wonderful talent but (like most of us) has no idea of how to deal with the publicity. She needs an agent now who has her best interests at heart but I doubt very much if one of them even exists. I think she is the type of woman who probably wants to see her days out in Blackburn with her pals but if she continues to sing its not going to be possible. I feel sorry for her to be honest.
I hope the BGT producers can guide her and protect her in a way that will benefit her and not just their pockets. Her mild learning difficulties will make things so much harder for her as well but more so the fact she has lived such a sheltered life.

Surely the reason - at least in part - that there has been such a fuss made is that, in a very spectacular manner, the performance forced people to challenge their assumptions. The response to it has been as much to do with the viewers (across the world) as it has been about S.B. herself, and much of the commentary has reflected this. It has also given people an opportunity to reflect on the superficiality of celebrity culture.
Good luck to her.

I totally agree with this post.
It is not Susan Boyle's fault but the way in which the tabloid press have reported on her every move, since she appeared on TV, has been utterly ridiculous.
She's been on the front pages of the newspapers, just about every day for the last 2 weeks.
As I say, it is not her fault but the constant coverage is actually starting to make me go off her.
The point that someone else made about the danger that someone might try to exploit her, due to the mental difficulties that she faces, is also very true.
She will need to surround herself with honest and genuine people.
I wish her all the best in the competition but I do wish the press would tone it down a bit.

It's blatantly obvious that (while she is a very good singer) the reason she is getting such ridiculous coverage is because of her appearance and the shock factor. If she was a 25 year old, beautiful and stylish woman and she gave the exact same performance then nobody would give a ****!
Its the exact same situation as Paul Potts (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k08yxu57NA) a couple of years ago. You have a middle aged fat man with dodgy teeth who can barely string a sentence together and who works as a phone salesman with a wife who he met on an internet chat room. He then belts out a cracking rendition of Nessun dorma and becomes and overnight celebrity! There's no way he would have had as much publicity if he'd turned up looking like Russell Watson.

There is no phenomenon here imho just the simple fact that a lady of a certain age has a lovely voice and in terms of appearance goes against everything that the materialistic and terribly vain shows similiar in ilk to the one she is on represents by and large. I wish the woman good luck personally as would rather listen to someone singing with a nice voice on the radio than some glamour model who is wailing away which is what society has force fed us the past decade or so. Who knows we may even get back to some nice songs in the future rather than some of the guff manufactured bands have produced.

I think people are genuinely amazed that someone so "ordinary" has got the break all of us can only dream about. I think for many of us it's a case of being brainwashed over time to believe that middle aged women with beautiful voices should all look glamorous.

I think the media have jumped on her so to speak D because of the way she is. Because she is frumpy for want of a better word it makes her talent appear more amazing to these media idiots. If she was a twenty something size 12 they would hardly bat an eyelid in my opinion,it certainly wouldn't be a worldwide phenomona (sp).
Thankfully there are enough people who would have seen her for the person she is long before this programme was even on the air. She doesn't seem short of real friends.

Rumours doing the rounds that she's ready to quit BGT because they are blocking her from doing any other shows...
They are potentially costing her thousands (if not millions) because of a contract she signed at the auditions

Why are people ever surprised that ugly people can sing a bit?
Did anyone keel over with surprise when they first saw Radiohead for example??
After The Bends was released a magazine (the name escapes me) had a picture of Thom Yorke on the front with the headline 'Ugleeee'. The whole article basically had a go at him about his looks not realising it was a disability.
As for Susan Boyle she can sing a bit but is being hyped up because of how she looks and her sheltered personal life. In a way she is being just as exploited based on her looks as any pussycat doll, page 3 girl or WAG.

People used to pay to get into lunatiic asylums, so they could laugh at the patients. Now we've got BGT, what's the latest freak show they're trotting out? Some guy from Wales who gets so nervous that he can't sing in public, and whose wife has died.
I am not laughing at the bloke, or Susan Boyle, I think it's a tragedy that in the 21st century people are still getting off on freak shows.

It's total over the top and gone way too far. Yes, a great singer, but there is other acts on taht show that are also very talented.
That Dance act that done the slow motion flag race thing, Diversity ? they were simply amazing.

Well, that's true.
I just don't follow how the whole world can be so shocked that an ugly person can sing just because it's on a talent show.
There are ugly people throughout the music and entertinment industry and there has been for ever.
:hmmm:

Don't know if there's any truth in this, but I hear she's a regular calller to the emergency services, she's meant to be a wee bit
