The Prime Minister's personal spin doctor Damian McBride quit after it emerged he and Derek Draper, Labour's internet campaign chief, conspired to spread false and sinister stories of a highly personal nature.

McBride boasted that the sleaze campaign "will put the fear of God" into the Tories.

The disgraced No 10 adviser, had no choice but to quit, his shabby email smears against leading Conservatives belong to a bygone era, the other Muppet that should have been sacked is Derek Draper who seems to behind most of the sleaze these day's. I would love to see what Labour's internet campaign chief remit is because I'm sure it won't have sleaze as his main duties.

Smears are, of course, a staple of politics not confined to any one party, but the charge against McBride and Draper is not just one of dirty tricks but of hamfisted meddling in a new media world they did not properly understand.

Spin and smear campaigns something that political parties within the UK are all guilty of using as a way of covering up for their own ineptitude and broken promises! Massive vote of no confidence for any political party from me and i am past caring to be brutally honest about the corrupt and greed that exists within UK politics.

Not saying he didnt do it but if it's in NOTW the story will have bells and whistles on it. Ihaven't read it and don't intend to either.

The NOTW to be fair have water down there version of this sleaze, (that must be a first for them) the more serious papers don't take prisoners and put the blame in the direction of Labour.

Surely, by printing the innuendo, the papers have actually done the job for Labour? In other words, now that the rumours are out there, it's fair game for the media to investigate the stories and find out whether there is any substance to them.

Smearing the opposition is what politics has always been about. From Julius Caesar through Macchiavelli until today. It would be more honest if they just admitted they all do it and move on:agree:

Macchiavelli didn't suggest that his prince should 'smear' the opposition, surely?

He told the prince to KILL them.

Before THEY killed HIM.

(And do it sneaky - so that nobody knew.)

Sound chap, Old Nick.

Just pointing out that they are Tories should be enough of a smear in itself surely? :agree:

The word is an Irish Gaelic insult from the 17th century, IIRC.

I have to admit that I'm at a bit of a loss to see how one CAN actually insult a Tory....

.... or a Lib Dem, come to that.

It's just another nail in labours coffin. Fully deserved, all though the alternative is equally awful....things are looking grim indeed.

I was given the DVD set of Ian Richardson (Francis Urquhart of House of Cards, etc) reading it.

He has JUST the right voice for it.

I play it in the car.

It is my constant inspiration.

:agree: He's the historical figure i'd most like to be. Imagine the fun you could have:devil:

He would be a useful addition to the Hibs boardroom as well.

I'd guess dear Niccolo was the ultimate in political back-room boys - not interested in power, you know - not at all. Just an "ideas man".

"If an injury has to be done to a man it should be so severe that his vengeance need not be feared...."

Couldn't put it better myself.

From a poster in deepest, darkest Essex.

Aaaahhh, what a difference geography makes :greengrin

Scottish Labour are a shambles at the moment no doubt, but IMO, they've got a long way to go before (I'm not necessarily pinning my colours to either mast, just stating a fact IMO) the name "Labour" comes with the same negative connotations in Scotland as the word "Tory"

Correction!

You are stating an opinion! (to which you are well entitled!):greengrin

But to the main point, if you lived in this country you might just form a different view - Labour are well on the way to political oblivion in this country!!

They do have hope (according to themselves) - they know their current Scottish leadership is dire beyond words and are pinning their hopes for survival on one Stephen Purcell of Glasgow City Council as their 'leader in waiting.'

There is certainly a risk in that happening. I'm not a fan at all, in fact I'm an outraged ex-Labour member. But total annihilation of a mainstream political party always leaves a dangerous imbalance in democracy. Labour have benefitted from that in the last few years.

When Labour installed devolution in 1999, they probably didn't even conceive of the day when they wouldn't be in control in one or other or both of the administrations.

Purcell can be a bit of an obnoxious soul, but perfect to head up Scottish Labour. Grey is a fairly toothless and ineffectual guy. Everything he does looks a bit staged or prompted. He doesn't seem to be making much of an impact, as much as some Labour folks like to cheer that he is.

Problem for Purcell is that after the next General Election, there may well be a few deposed Scottish Labour westminsterites looking to taste power once again. And what better place to set up your own personal fiefdom than Scotland? People have been doing it in one way or another since we left our caves.
