I've perhaps led a somewhat sheltered life but I've never ventured into one of those establishments. I've heard mixed reports ranging from the preserve of low-lifes, jakeys and cheapskates to a great place for bargains and basic quality goods at non rip-off prices.
Any views?

I have a Lidl fairly local to me and I use it a couple of times a month for my main shopping.
Most of their products are OK and their frozen goods are excellent value.
For the record. I do some work with an Irish meat group, Kepak, who supply both Lidl and Tesco with their fresh beef and pork produce. You will buy exactly the same cuts at Tesco as you will in Lidl, except Lidl are probably 30% cheaper.

Yes, have heard they do decent frozen lobster. I shall get down there with my Harvey Nicks Food Hall bag, so that I don't frighten the Merchiston neighbours going home.
The fruit is cheap and usually good quality and the fruit juice is much cheaper. My kids love nectar. The meat is nice too.

I concur.
I usually buy a couple of jars of their white asparagus spears and their mixed mushroom anti-pasti.
Their Gorgonzola is decent, too (add that to the aforementioned ingredients for a tasty :top markslunch).
Not as good as Tesco or Morrison's IMHO

I would like to go on the record as saying that their Cream of Vegetable cup-soups are the best in the world.

Lidl is class. Cheap as chips and good quality so long as you you have half a brain about what and what not to buy. And ithas undoubtedly the most entertaining customers in the entire supermarket world.

I go to Lidl about once a month to get stuff I can't find elsewhere. We've done our weekly shopping there a couple of times for the sake having a change, but wouldn't do it 2 weeks running as we'd probably end up buying/eating exactly the same things.

There's an Aldi here that I've been to once. I lasted about 2 minutes and I won't be going back.
Simply awful.

As a single person, I prefer Lidl and Aldi. That is because they have a much smaller range than the big boys, and I am not overwhelmed by choice. Also I feel like I am getting much better value for money, in terms of price (low) and quality (better than supermarket own brand).
You also get quirky things that the likes of Tesco don't stock (or if they do at twice the price). Lidl do excellent antipasti both in jars and fresh, at half the price of what the bigger chains do. Pesto is half the price, feta cheese is half the price, pizzas are half the price etc etc
Actually, I'm a bit concerned at how popular Lidl is becoming so please ignore what I have said. The food is crap, the labels are all in foreign and they don't take Scottish pound notes.

Yup. If you go in regularly and keep your eyes open you can get some real bargains in hardware/electrical and stuff.
Fruit and veg can be variable in my experience, but the tinned/frozen foods are fine, as are the fruit juices and cheeses and cooked meats - and a lot cheaper.
The thing is you have to think about what you're buying in Lidl - you can't just go round in a brain-dead coma filling your trolley like you can in Tesco or Morrisons.
And IMO Tesco's fruit and veg is worse than Lidl's.
Mind you, that's Coatbridge, and in Coatbridge deep-fried pizza counts as a salad.
