Anyone ever had it?

Iv been suffering from it for 10 days, but only got diagnosed a few days ago. My main reason for asking is that i have now gone 3 days with about 20 minutes sleep combined, and haven't been able to eat anything for 2 days, at some points im close to tears when taking a sip of water.

Ive also had a blood test done as they fear it might be Glandular fever, anyone got any experience of that? Im not sure i could go for 3 months like this without jumping out a window...

Cheers

I have had tonsilitus a few times, once it lasted a couple of weeks & I could not eat anything, I lost close to a stone.

Also had Glandular fever a couple of years back, it was chronic, started off with a really sore throat & spewing up horrid stuff, then the tiredness set in I couldnt even walk up a set of stairs without feeling like I had run a marathon, I was off work for close to 3 months with that & took me about a year for my Immune System to fully recover.

I’ve been getting it regularly for the last few years. Sometimes I get completely floored and can’t get out of my bed, other times I fell fine but have a really really sore throat. I’m usually too ill to be posting on hibs.net though…

Fortunately for me the penicillin usually kicks in after 2/3 days and I start feeling better. I also have no trouble sleeping for lengthy periods at a time so usually sleep through the worst of it.

Get well soon.

I had tonsilitis recently and couldn't lift my head for 3 days. Penicillan kicked in eventually but its hard going. Try sooking ice poles or lollys, even just an ice cube will help. It'll get fluid into you and the cold will help the pain a little.

:greengrin I’ve heard folk say this before – don’t think they had tonsillitis though.

Seriously though – no that doesn’t happen to me.

yep, I've had tonsillitis quite a few times.
Worst was about 10 years ago, and sounds very similar to what you're suffering. They didn't know if it was just severe tonsillitis, an abcess in my throat, or glandular fever.
Glandular fever results came back negative, so they just put it down to severe tonsillitis and post viral fatigue, although apparently it's quite hard to diagnose GF. Was signed off work for 3 weeks, and went back to work on light duties coz I was still really weak.

You don't say if you're on any medication? If not, then you should definitely get something. I ended up taking 4 different kinds of antibiotics, and 2 separate painkillers.
I think the normal dose of amoxycillin for tonsillitis is something along the lines of 3 x 250mg capsules? I went to 2 x 3 grams! Which was really annoying, as it was in powder form, to be dissolved in water. And for 3 grams, you need a fair bit of water to dissolve it in. So drinking that large glass of water was extremely difficult when it was a nightmare swallowing.

As for the sleeping, yep, that was a nightmare too. Can only suggest covering your pillow with a towel, and changing that regularly to catch all the saliva. Try taking a painkiller that makes you feel drowsy, so you should sleep for a bit longer, but just means you'll be slavering onto your towel/pillow. Definitely not nice, and I can only empathise. Thankfully, it was only that bad the once.....

You'll probably not feel like eating, but tomato soup should help. Probably the easiest thing to swallow. And again, you probably won't want to, but make sure you get enough fluids. Being dehydrated really won't help.

Other than that, plenty of rest, and make sure your friends and family look after you...

Hope you feel better soon :)

Your slavering because of the swelling at the back of your throat. Most men just slaver - your lucky you have an excuse

I had a spell about 15 years ago where I got it a lot, until my dentist told me that I had a problem with my wisdom teeth which caused infection and inflammation at the back of my throat. I thought that was :blah::blah:, but as soon as I had my wisdom teeth out the frequency with which I got tonsilitis was much reduced. If you get it bad / often, the best thing is to speak to the Doc and ask about getting them whipped out.

Funnily enough my tonsillitis has started to get worse/more frequent since I had my wisdom teeth out.

Countless times, unfortunately. Given those symptoms it sounds like you've got a bad case but you've done the right thing by visiting your GP. If theres is puss on/from your tonsils it may suggest a bacterial infection which may respond to a course of antibiotics. If your tonsils are red, inflammed but not producing puss itsmore likely a viral infection, in which case antibiotics would not be effective, and symptomatic relief (painkillers) is about as good as it gets.

I hope for your sake it's not glandular fever. The ex had it and it floored her for months.

Get well soon...

Its a matter of having a cup beside you at all times to spit into - overnight especially. I've had a bad throat infection when I couldn't swallow for a couple of days but that sounds horrendous. Hope it gets better soon...

Most medical people will recommend that you temporarily suppress the symptoms through medication or surgical removal (they are known to grow back).

The problem with this approach, though, is that it doesn't take into account the fact that the tonsils are part of the body's self-defence/warning system. The fact that the tonsils are reacting indicates that the organism is exposed to some harmful influence.

By removing or suppressing these "indicators", you are left with no appearance of illness, however the harmful influence (the reason the tonsils reacted in the first place) can continue unhindered. It's a bit like cutting the oil light cable in a car to stop the red light in the dash rather than sorting out the oil, being it the sump, worn rings, or whatever.

Basically, the tonsils are there for your protection. Better to try and work out what they are warning you about.

Correct, I had a few bouts of Tonsilitus when I was younger, the Doctor kept saying to me the next time it happens you will need to get them out. I never had it again for a few years, the next time I got it I mentioned the fact to the Doctor, she advised me that these days they refrain from removing them due to that point :agree:

PS. You really are the analogy king

Got mine out after 9 months of constant tonsillitis so I know how your feeling. Strongest anti-biotics wouldn't clear it! Operation is not as bad as people make out! I was eating as soon as I was back in the ward!!

Its now been 15 days since catching it, 5 days since diagnosis, and i have to say, its been the worst week fo my life. Im now able to drink easier but still with discomfort, but i still haven't eaten anything for 5 days.

Im pretty sure its tonscilitis now as the white spots, blisters or whatever they are have appeared, am i right in thinking that these are not a symptom of glandular fever?

Sleeping is still just as bad, sleeping for 15 minutes at a time then waking up, but i have found relative success when sitting up and sleeping.

Thanks again for everyones replies...

If you are on antibiotics now, it should clear up within days (took about 3 days to clear up after antibiotics for me).

It is a nightmare though, I had it last year and it was the worst case I remember ever having - in bed for a week, couldn't eat, could barely drink anything, and would wake up needing to spew as well. Spewing with tonsilitis must be one of the things that is least fun in the world!! :bitchy:

just had my worst experience to date, just finished struggling down my final penicillen tablets of the evening. 5 minutes later i start gagging and if i thought it was painful things entering my throat, i was dreaming because vomiting, although only pills, water and puss, was agony.

So now after all the effort and pain i went through to keep hydrated and take my pills, its wasted :grr:
