I am constantly bombarded with phone cals from companies trying to sell me double glazing, Central heating, mobile phones etc etc.

Does anyone know the phone number you can contact to get your number barred from receiving these calls.

Many Thanx

Jae

It only stops the sellers. Funnily since i registered I have been selected many times to have the opportunity to win kitchens, bathrooms etc. I only have to answer a couple of questions or do a survey.

The latest one said I had been selected for an opportunity to win a security system because of the increase in crime in the Glasgow area they wanted me to be safe, I pointed out I didn't live in the Glasgow area and he said they had recently widened the area to Glasgow and the surrounding areas. I pointed out that it would have to be a very wide circle to include west Lothian and he got stroppy with me so I hung up :greengrin

I tell them I am just going out to work but if they give me their number I will phone them about 4 am when I finish. No takers for that yet.

I think the TPS only works properly with auto dialling systems where the number is loaded into the non dial file of the system. If it's someone working from home we just have to put up with it-they're only trying to earn a crust.

I've got a foolproof way of getting rid of them - get a four year old and tell her it's someone who wants to talk to her about Scooby Doo.

They tend to hang up quite quickly after that :greengrin

Our nuymber's been registered with TPS for some time now, but it makes no difference to the number of calls.

I usually just say 'No thanks' and hang up, but if I get 4 or 5 in a morning, I may just ask the guy to hold the line and walk away. I don't know how long they'll hold on for - they've always hung up by the time I've boiled the kettle and made a cup of coffee and come back to the phone....

I've been tempted to use the old referee's whistle down the telephone trick, but a friend told me that that was cruel, and I could get into trouble with the police.

Since registering with TPS I havent had any problems at all with these sort of calls, except ones from the bank wanting to give me money.

Once (before registering) I got a call from some place wanting to do a survey so I said yes of course but can you just hold on a minute while I do something (cant remember what) I laid the phone down and just left it. Not sure how long they waited before hanging up. :greengrin

Only annoying calls I get these days are from family :greengrin

When I lived with my folks some window company called most night telling me that we had won a conservatory, eventually I said yes your welcome to come out and measure up, but what the catch, no catch sir...ok then pop-out tomorrow evening for the measure up!!

Some salesman arrived, I kept an eye on him as he was walking around my folks garden, rubbing his head, shaking his head, puffing and oooing. I walked around to see him, introduced myself and asked what colour of stilts I could have the conservatory placed on, he ask, sorry what do you me Mr. C, well I presume you know we're on the first floor!!!!!

After him going off on one for 5mins, he eventually found the funny side of it and promised to take us off the cold calling list and to remind his agents to ask what floor the houses were on before making appointments, I bet his drive back to Stirling was a pleasant one!!

I'm registered with the TPS - I try the "how did you get this number I'm registered with the TPS" sometimes they hang up instantly other times they actually tell you it's from a randomly generated system!

Found that most of these numbers are withheld numbers - I got "Anonymous Call Reject" along with "Caller Display" and the number of calls have dramatically reduced - still get a small number, usually dialling from an 0845 or 0870 prefix. I just ignore them :greengrin

I remember years ago some American guy phoned the house, and offered my dad some software to try out, if he would give them a brief review of it. After chatting a while and choosing the software to try the guy then asked for my dad's credit card details. My dad asked why, and the guy said it was to pay for the software! My dad then told the guy he wasn't going to take the software as it was not a free trial as suspected, to which the guy went off his nut. He went ape about the cost of a 20 minute phone call to the UK, to which my dad replied;
"I didn't ask you to phone me, did I?"

They also always seem to programme their calls just as you're sitting down to dinner. We used to get calls to our flat in Glasgow from people operating under the illusion that we were running a bed and breakfast of some sorts.

Most of the time its harmless and irritating, but when the ****wits phone up asking to speak to my dad (who died over 2 years ago) I have a strong urge to put a brick through their face for being such insensitive ********s.

Calls to the flat seem to have subsided recently, although we keep getting that computer voice talking.

Lost count of the phone calls I got for 'Peter the Painter'. One guy actually had the cheek to argue with me after I told him it was a wrong number he'd got, and to put Peter on.

Not the same thing I know, but at one point my phone number was 555 6025 with the pizza place across the road being 556 0255, therefore anyone who hit an extra '5' when phoning for a pizza got me. I got so fed up that I eventually started taking orders, telling people it would be ready in 25 minutes, etc.

If any of them called back to ask what the f*** was happening with their calzone, I just told them they had a wrong number. :greengrin

When I was younger our phone number was one digit different from a golf course, we used to get calls all the time for people wanting to book a round etc, we used to get really annoyed until we started booking them in.

I would have really loved to have seen peoples faces when they turned up to be told that the golf course had no clue what they where on about. :faf::faf:

Tell me about it. I tend to answer the phone at work and I've lost count the number of times people phone my work when they're trying to get someone else, but continue to ramble on despite me telling them my company's name, what we do (printing) and that fact they have the wrong number. Some people when you tell them they have the wrong number reply 'are you sure?'. :grr:

The worst one was some ditty old woman who started telling me how sorry she was that she missed her hair appointment the day before. Despite me telling her three times she had the wrong number, she kept on explaining why she missed the appointment and could she make another one. I just hung up.

I was beginning to think it was the bloke from the Real Radio wind up.

My home number must be similar to Persevere Taxi's, I've lost count of the number of phone calls I've had in the middle of the night from drunken idiots! :grr:

My work number must be similar to a home help or something like that, because I've had a fair few voicemail messages from Old people, the best one was a wee woman that sounded so old she could barely speak, she left a message over a holiday weekend asking for a cup of tea, she didn't leave a name or anything so I've no idea how long she sat waiting for it!

the house i used to live was listed twice in the phone book, half a page apart.

we'd always get a second call about an hour after the first. every time.

I'm on TPS and only rarely do I get a sales call, and unless the person is a bell end then I'll be civil to them, but tell them I'm not interested.

I know how hard a job it is to phone people to sell to them, and so I go easy on folk.

If they're rude, however, then I don't hold back!
