Anyone on this 'fine' forum been to one of these universities? I've received offers from all three and I'm currently deliberating over them.

The courses are all similar: English/Media/Journalism - those kind of things.

RGU has the best employment rate in Scotland(97%); second only to Cambridge.
Napier has a very good reputation for Journalism but I'm not sure about continuing to live with my parents. I know it is financially prudent but... meh.
Stirling is probably the most prestigious out of the three and there is an option to study abroad in 3rd year (Japan:thumbsup:).

Any hardened university veterans ready to plug - or discredit - their Uni?

I'm at RGU in the business school.

RGU, the course, and the business school are all great, I'm glad with the choice.

Aberdeen?:bitchy: Not my cup of tea for a city but all my mates here love it. I'd came back from travelling though so Aberdeen was always going to be a shock to the system:greengrin.

Any more questions abt RGU then pm me.

If your from Edinburgh, then it is great getting out of the city that you grew up in. I love being in Aberdeen, (AU - not RGWho???:duck:) and the nightlife is great. it's also a nice city. Whilst Edinburgh is only a few hours away on the train for coming home. And you will have the long holidays from Uni to spend in Edinburgh.

Staying with your parents is a cheaper option, but I personally love being away from home.

Don't know much about Stirling, apart from it being a campus uni, RGU is right in the heart of Aberdeen, which I would see as a benefit.

Finally, how many times a year do Hibs play in stirling?

I did Film and Media at Stirling. An enjoyable course, and definitely one of the better in the country in that department :agree:

I think the Journalism degree on its own is fairly new there though, but certainly the Film and Media department is highly regarded for it's research etc.

If I were a young chap choosing a University today my criteria would be:

1. Quality of course and prestige of university - they all score high on quality, Stirling probably most prestigious.
2. Male/female ratio - I'd wan't to go to a place where there were loads of women. Being stuck with scores of male engineering and science students would be no good for Bobby. A high percentage of arts course plus students living away from home usually indicates a fair social life.
3. Far enough from the parental home to avoid interference in my life, but close enough to drop in occassionally and sponge of them.
4. Access to bars and nightclubs.

I'd probably go for Stirling out of the three.

Id go with Stirling purely for the year studying in Japan!

I went with the easy option and stayed at home and went to napier. It was OK and i had 0 student debt which helped when it came to working and buying a flat but i really do wish i had went away or at least studied abroad for a bit!

I've replied to my offers. I'm studying Politics and German at Glasgow if I meet my conditions, and at Aberdeen if I don't.

I'd tell you to go for RGU out of those three.

Big up Aberdeen why don't ya? :greengrin

Personally, I'd go for Stirling, especially if you get the chance to study abroad - once in a lifetime oppurtunity. Also lets you get away from home. RGU is more central to Aberdeen than Stirling is to the city centre but not much to distinguish between the two in terms of nightlife IMO.

I went to Napier. Good uni, good facilities and definitely with a decent reputation and still getting better.

I can't speak for any of the other unis.

Whatever you end up doing, I highly reccomend not living with your parents. Napier has plenty of it's own accomodation which you would be eligible for.

As a student who's been in Dundee for almost 4 years, and who's worked the whole time I've been at uni.

Stay in Edinburgh if you can, and more live at home if you can. Uni is ok if you like to go out all the time, until you get to second year or so and you end up spending more money than you have on ***** and spending all your freetime making deadlines.

its might be naff living at home, but its even worse when your constantly skint and still have the meet bills.

the key to enjoying uni is to find a good course, if you hate it you wont be committed and keeping your costs as low as possible.

If you move away you'll have rent, food, gas, elec before you consider anything else. Whilst you stay at home you'll pay digs most likely?

feel free to ignore all that, move to aberdeen etc, be skint, drunk and never get laid. :greengrin

What was I bloody thinking when I chose to study Physics!?!?

Out of the 19 of us in final year physics, there are 3 girls.

St Andrews is famous for the Golden Ratio of 2:1

Thats right, 2 girls for every guy.

If that's the main motivation, English Literature is a no-brainer. There must be ten fillies to every effete, winsome waif such as myself.

True. Although I think I have the best of both worlds, I enjoy my course, no fitties means fewer distractions so more work gets done, leaving me with more time to meet hot girls outside study time.

I would disagree with all of that. I moved into halls at HW and now live in a flat with guys from uni. I work about 13 hours a week and have a student loan and I cover the bills easy enough. Fair enough I will have some debt when I leave uni but I don't regret moving out at all. In fact I would recommend trying to move into halls even if you go to Napier.

Can I ask what the course entails? That may be a bit of a vague question but I would love to do journalism yet have no idea what kind of things the course involves.

depends how big your loan is right enough or if you pay your rent etc (lot of folk i know get help from parents).

As I said feel free to ignore it all. Uni is fun, but I reckon the vast majority of students would agree that money is an issue and sometimes it's nice to let folk know the otherside of the coin without making it out to be all drinking, partying and ****ging.
