Can anyone suggest a decent restaurant that serves good quality plain food.
My wife's aunt and family are coming up to Edinburgh to celebrate her 60th birthday in the summer and we're looking for a suitable venue for 12 adults and a baby.
They are particularly unadventurous when it comes to food - "I could stretch to an Italian restaurant cos I don't mind lasagna and I suppose in extreme circumstances, I might let wild horses drag me to a Chinese" - you get the picture.
I had thought about the Peacock Inn at Newhaven, but they'll be staying in Corstorphine and it will cost £60+ for taxis. That's do-able, but I just wanted to check possible alternatives.

Toby Carvery in Corstorphine is excellent, good location for them aswell and serves the traditional beef, yorkshire puddings etc.

The South Gyle food court
The Carvery was my first thought too. Couldn't get much simpler food and as said before its no distance at all.

There is a Toby carvery opening up in place of the Brewers fayre at Silverknowes. Nice view if you can get a window seat of the Forth and a good size too.

They'll actually be staying at The Carvery so I doubt they'll want that for the birthday meal.

Fabio's in Corstorphine is a decent Italian, and the Chinese Manor House is a cracking Chinese, although it's a bit pricey. You'd get a good meal in both though, and they're each just a five minute walk from the Toby.

I know them, and use them both.
The Chinese Manor House is particularly good. :agree:

The Spylaw Tavern in Colinton Village...
Good shout.
When I saw the title my first thought was the Peacock Inn, ticked all the boxes and despite the taxi fares you could end up spending the same, or less, as the price of food and drink is very reasonable compared with many.
There's a room upstairs for functions. I used it for my wedding meal a couple of years ago and went a la carte. Not the brightest of places but you would have peace and quiet. Not sure about only 12 folk but you could ask.

What about the Cramond Brig ? Gets good write ups. Not sure how easy it would be to get there for you though?

The only problem is the baby. Most pubs don't allow children in after 8.00pm.

Not sure about the baby but how about nipping down to the Kings Wark on The Shore Davy? We always enjoy the food and the nice atmosphere in there.

Menu might be a bit pricey/fancy Dave but if you want something they won't forget then take them to Heights (http://www.apexhotels.co.uk/hotels/edinburgh-international/eat-and-drink/heights-restaurant/) at the Apex-Grassmarket.
Really nice meal and a view to die for.

Hard to imagine a less convenient location with an EH postcode than Longniddry if you are based in Corstorphine.

That's a really good suggestion.
Nice and central location, good food with reasonably plain options for the unadventurous, and a Scottish theme.
The only downside is that as I'll be the only Scot in the party, I'll have to translate.
Joint favourites are The Sizzling Scot and The Peacock at the moment.

Visited there just before Christmas and while it was fine it wasn't remarkable. Probably expected just a wee bit more for the prices they were charging.

Are you sure you don't mean the Crammond Inn? I go there quite regularly. Does a very good lunch so I'm sure the dinner will be good too. Traditional Scottish fayre and an unusual pub (all it's own beers, spirits even soft drinks) with lovely surroundings. Might be a bit pricey for the taxi again though.

What about the Stac Poly - one at Grindlay Street if you're at that side of town. Good quality Scottish fare. Bit pricey but IMHO well worth it.
Take them down to the Corrie Inn and get some re-heated frozen pub fare :greengrin

Take Gary MacKay and tie his hands to one tractor and his legs to another, driving them in opposite directions.

I would recommend this one. Ideal for a nice walk and then meal, on a Sunday, with the papers. Gets my vote every time!

The Cramond Inn would be perfect.
It's lovely, the beer's incredibly cheap and the food's hearty and well made. It's also much nearer than the Peacock so taxi fares are about half.
Down side is, it's a pub so the baby will get violently ejected after 8,00 pm.
We were there for a pint last week and asked. :-(

Get a window seat and park the buggy next to the window on the outside. :greengrin
You can reach out and rock the buggy if the kid gets restless. Sorted.
