Killers could be forced to pay for the funerals of their victims, under new legislation being considered by the Scottish Government.

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill is looking at the measure as part of a shake-up of the legal system.

The sanction could apply to any unlawful death - from murder to people killed by drunk or speeding drivers.

It would form part of the new Criminal Justice and Licensing Bill,

It would mean that for the first time, courts could order an offender to compensate relatives for bereavement and funeral expenses.

If any of my family were killed the last thing I would want is knowing that their murderers money was used to pay for the funeral, it would be like them having the final say in the matter.

A funeral is an intensely personal affair, especially when the death has occurred through violence or accident.

This sounds and feels too much like blood-money. Sequestrate and sell the killer's goods and give the money to a charity chosen by his/her victim's family, maybe.

Noy a good idea, IMO.

If they get the jail for murder how are they going to get money?

No doubt the government will give them some kind of grant.

If I lost a loved one through crime I wouldn't want to be reminded of their killer every time I visited their grave, but I'm lucky to be in a relatively comfortable financial position. I am sure there are occasions when the families of victims would face a real struggle to pay for the funeral. If this gives them an option to avoid further hardship then maybe it isn't a completely stupid idea.
