I have just had the Bank of Scotland fraud department on the phone to me to tell me my card has been cloned and now been cancelled. (they tried to use it in Indonesia)

Luckily no money was taken out but they have told me the reckon it was cloned when I used it at Maybury petrol station, they have also said they think the Craigleith and Crewe Toll stations have the same problem and have advised me not to use cards in any of these petrol stations.

just a wee warning to all.

i'd be careful as the petrol stations can sue any website that says stuff like this as it can damage reputations etc

Have amended thread title and posts to remove company name - warning still understandable in terms of identifying stations

I work for Edinburgh University, and the Uni has sent emails several times advising staff not to use credit cards at Crewe Toll, Craigleith, Lizzie Bryce and some other locations. Everyone would do well to follow that advice. No one has sued the University yet. Any legal case for defamation would fall in five minutes on the grounds that there is indisputable factual evidence that these things have happened in these places.

This has been a problem for a few yearsnow, I stopped using my card in these machines in petrol stations a long time ago and pay cash, I only ever use my card in the chip n pin in tesco or asda, not saying thats safer but that is only place I use that facility.

My parents have had problems with the garages at Crewe toll, Craigleith and Maybury so like OP said, best staying clear of them. :agree:

I take it that it would be perfectly safe to use pay at the pump then...or is only a matter of time before these scrotes find a way to clone cards from these too?

Is it only the cash machines outside or is it when they are being used in the station?

Mine was cloned from the broughton garage after using it in store (don't think they had chip and pin at that time).

Thankfully RBS caught it. Good work boys :greengrin

I actually had a loan put into my bank on the day / day before they tried to use it but had taken it all out to buy a car.

There's been a spate of petrol stations being worked-over in London and the Home Counties, mostly by Tamil and Sri-Lankan gangs.

Pay cash whenever possible (although the above areas aren't keen on Scottish notes).

This isn't new, and i can't see anyone being sued either considering this was splashed all over the Evening News last year.

Same stations time and time again.....I know these crooks are meant to be smart but really what are the Police doing about this, cards have been getting cloned at the Craigleith garage for at least a year (probably much more)...bout time the operator of the garage was held responsible for any loss. Not sure of the law but being so negligent as to allow constant fraud in your premises must surely be actionable by the authorities in some way.

My mum had a similar problem a couple of months ago.

The bank phoned her up to tell her that there had been an attempted fraud on her card in both Australia and Canada. Fortunately the bank was alert and blocked the transaction as they realised that it was unusual for the card to be used in such places.

The card was eventually blocked altogether and she had a new one sent out. However, she had another call from the bank, the other week. Again, she was told that there had been an attempted fraud on her card, this time from Indonesia.

Fortunately, this wasn't her new card, the bank had forgotten to completely delete her old card from their records.

When they phoned the first time, she asked how this could have happened and was told that, although they had no way of proving that this is how it happened, there had been several cases of card fraud at service stations in Edinburgh. We used to go to those stations whenever we went to Easter Road.

My best advice is use un-staffed petrol stations (such as at asda) as no human involvement which is where most 'skimming' occurs.

Just like ATM's check for anything unusual attached and cover keypad when entering PIN
